Those rare cases include Logan's Run. Good move but seriously? But between that and King Kong it was a shit year for effects work.

A lot of those effects haven't held up over the years. Lord of the Rings, King Kong, and Spider-Man come to mind.
It is interesting though to see what films effects have held up over the years. Especially from the really old films.

Glad to see no star wars movie has won since 1983. Much deserved.

Ok, I haven't seen What Dreams May Come but Saving Private Ryan has got to consider itself unlucky for that year, for not even being nominated let alone not winning.
I guess in more recent times there have been more visually impressive films about, so naturally there are going to be a few omissions in competitive years that I'd have been happy seeing win the award. Things like Doctor Strange, or any of the new Planet of the Apes films. Or Transformers even. The films might be shit but the effects are still spectacular. Prometheus too.
I also kind of agree about Lord of the Rings' and King Kong's special effects looking on the dated side now. Some special effects have stood the test of time better than others.
