Hopefully someone revives it again but maybe Paul W.S. Anderson and his damned Pompeii killed it off after all.

Ben-Hur (1959) is my all-time favorite. Spartacus, Quo Vadis, Gladiator, The Fall of the Roman Empire, and Cleopatra are also among some of my favorites.

I voted for Spartacus, Jason and the Argonauts and Sinbad series (if I have to pick one: Golden Voyage).
Also, sentimental shout out to 'The Colossus of Rhodes,' mainly for featuring my favorite ancient lighthouse/defensive station/wonder of the world.

As a film fan I feel guilty that my top five picks were from 2000 and beyond.
Gladiator- Visually stunning, and top notch performances across the board. Also features a fantastic score. Didn't reinvent the genre but a masterfully produced film in every aspect.
Alexander- Absolutely love that flick, it's in my all time top five for any film, not just this sub-genre. Is most of it conjecture? Sure, but that isn't the point. Stone paints a portrait of what motivates one of the most fascinating rulers in human history.
Troy- Honestly the Achilles action sequences make up for the rest of the film being average. Still, those actions scenes feature some of the best fight choreography I've ever seen.
The Eagle- Such a sneaky good film. You look at the cast or the movie poster and you might think it's generic at best, but damn if it isn't packed with great cinematography and music. Also it's got tropes and themes that I eat up every time-- 'guy on a mission, even if it kills him,' and 'tribal displacement from both perspectives,' which it completely nails. Just a great little adventure/drama.
300- Yeah, I said it. Over the top, ridiculous and entertaining as all get out. You don't watch it for historical accuracy, you watch it for the laughs. There's a sick humor to this kind of cartoon violence that suits the subject matter perfectly.
Honorable Mentions to Spartacus (1960), it was tough leaving this one out. Truly one of the greats.; 300 Rise of an Empire managed to recapture the absurd feel of the original without feeling stale the second time around; Clash of the Titans (1981) was one of my favorite flicks as a kid, I still get a kick out of it when I come across it on tv.
Surprised to see The Last Legion listed as that movie is clearly unintentional camp. But to each their own, I can't judge since I picked 300 over many cinematic classics. I enjoyed King Arthur (2004) more upon rewatch, but it still lacks both the emotional punch of a drama and the adrenaline rush of an actioner. It has some nice ideas, but never does anything to pull the audience in.

Gladiator and Troy.
Gladiator for the action and the very well excecuted fights and it also has a great story but I love Troy as a sword and Sandals chick flick.
It has three love stories my favorite The one of Aquillies and Briseis and two very good looking leading man: Brad Pitt and Eric Bana

i can't say it's the best film but Jason and the Argonauts gives me wicked nostalgia. the stop motion skeletons just blew my mind as a kid.

A genre that deserves better attention than Pompeii or that Ben-Hur remake.
