There's been some buzz that Glenn just might win an Oscar next year (finally) for her performance in The Wife. But having seen the film myself, I'm not so sure that she'll win. For starters, the film is short -- it's only around 90 minutes or so. The film felt a bit rushed. And Glenn simply wasn't given much to do. Her role felt more like a supporting performance than a lead. The film was more about her husband's character (played by Jonathan Pryce) than about hers. Her acting nonetheless was fantastic (especially her facial expressions). She's a very nuanced actress. I just think there might be some stronger performances this year that she'll have to compete against. For example, although I still haven't seen A Private war, I have seen the trailer, and Rosamund Pike's performance looks really strong.
With that being said, I love Glenn, she's my favorite actress, and I'd love for her to win an Oscar. Jonathan Pryce was also superb as her husband. In my opinion he deserves an Oscar nomination. Though, this year there are several noteworthy performances by males in leading roles, so it's unlikely that he'll get nominated unless the studio puts on a strong campaign for the film.
By the way, Glenn's real-life daughter Annie plays a younger version of Glenn's character in the film. I thought that was a nice touch.

I'd like it if Toni Collete got a nod for Hereditary. Seems unlikely unless they play up the family drama half more than the "demonic cult" portion.

Based on reviews, maybe, and Glenn Close is certainly an actress who deserves an Oscar. But I suspect the critics' favourite may be Olivia Colman, who has been raved to the hills for The Favourite, which looks like great fun (based on reviews and trailer, anyway).
Either of them would be fine by me - so long as they keep it within the acting industry and don't go 'Gaga' by rewarding a singer instead...

All they really care about is ratings, and they're gonna nominate her thinking it's going to lead to higher ratings.

And so it begins....The National Board of Review just chose Gaga as Best Actress. Although, that organization and its awards are the LEAST relevant of awards season. As an example, last year they chose The Post as Best Picture, Greta Gerwig as Best Director, Meryl Streep as Best Actress, And Tom Hanks as Best Actor, none of which won Oscars.

How popular is she industry wise? I've read some fairly snarky comments she has made about colleagues that may have cost her votes (although admittedly one of them - Malkovich - worked with her again).
Colman would be fine with me. Collette maybe even more so (she has been so good so often for so long).
I can't get behind Gaga but have not seen the movie.
What about the Rachels in DISOBEDIENCE ?

good gor her. disapointed to see No Nom for Toni collette... Yes. Toni was fantastic and I was surprised she didn't get nominated. But, as I mentioned in the first post, Rosamund Pike seemed to have given a strong performance, and I'm glad she got nominated because she had been overlooked up until now.

Loved the Best Actress Drama lineup with the exception of Lady Gaga. Best Actress Comedy is going to be a duel between Olivia Colman and Emily Blunt. So glad for Vice and its multiple nominations, especially Christian Bale -- that's another performance that had been overlooked up until now.
Hated the Best Picture nomination for Black Panther. I suspect A Star Is Born will win Best Picture Drama, and Green Book or Mary Poppins Returns will win Best picture Comedy/Musical. But who knows, there may be some surprises.

Yes also very happy about VICE. big hopes for it to go strong into the Oscar race. Green Book didnt do anything for me, so I am not thrilled with its nominations, but I get how topical it is. Black Panther should win production design for sure, and original music (will probably not beat Shallow as original song).

As usual, there doesn't seem to be any real powerhouse, standout female performances for the year. There will be strong talent nominated, but no-one will know of or care much for the films they are nominated for. Undoubtedly both actresses will get nominated for Mary, Queen of Scots. But I aint seeing that movie cause I know what's coming up. I can watch Peter Jackson's super bloody "Dead Alive" once a week, no problem. But I don't want to see somebody getting beheaded on the public square. That's just too much for me. And I think Glenn deserved the Oscar for "Fatal Attraction".

The National Board of Review has been around FOREVER, but I think it is the least interesting of the award groups. I have always been partial to the National Society of Film Critics, which has been around since 1966. They seem to be the biggest risk takers. Like they gave 1976 Best Actress to Sissy Spacek for "Carrie", which I think was totally deserved.

I consider it the most prestigious of the major critics' groups, and I find myself agreeing with a lot of their choices.

Here's an interesting fact about The Wife: the actor Max Irons who plays Glenn's son in the movie is the son of Jeremy Irons, who played Glenn's husband in Reversal of Fortune back in 1990. By the way, Glenn is hoping to star in a future production of the musical version of Sunset Boulevard. She had starred in the stage version of the musical in the mid 90s (1994 I believe). There are clips on Youtube of Glenn when she played Norma Desmond in the musical. She was amazing in that. deadline.com/2018/12/glenn-close-on-her-15th-golden-globe-nom-and-the-sunset-boulevard-film-1202515432/

Today, Glenn received a SAG Award nomination for Best Actress! And on Monday she received a Critics' Choice nomination for Best Actress. So far, she's got three of the four precursor nominations (only the BAFTA nominations remain which will be announced next month). She's well on her way to an eventual Oscar nomination.
