There are negative and positive portrayals of characters from all aspects of life. Do you object to homosexuality being portrayed as something positive and if you do, is this because of your own prejudices? I do not object, but there most certainly are not both "negative and positive" portrayals of homosexual characters on TV. It is almost always positive, at the very worst simply neutral. There is a definite fear and refusal to go with a negative portrayal, because of all the accusations they would get afterwords. It is the mould of the stereotype that has been at the forefront of homosexual representation in films and shows over decades. If they weren't campy and effeminate and used a buffer for humor, they were then represented as shifty or deviate sociopaths\psychopaths, or had mega insecurity and self-worth issues. There would have been a few exceptions, but these films would have not been mainstream either so wouldn't have reached a wider audience.
While negative aspects are portrayed towards straight characters, the sexuality aspect behind them isn't seen as aberrant, unless it was an aspect of the film's theme touching on more controversial aspects of the character's sexuality and how they may treat women, or how women may use their sex to get the things they want from men and use them.
Straight is normal by default, Gay hasn't been able to take the same for granted. It is the signals portrayed and that is why it is treated with a little more sensitivity due to heterosexism in society. I guess that is is the point of this thread and the representation of something that still does get judged and condemned by many, when it need not be seen as anything other than just a relationship between 2 people, which most people are in. People do what they do, because of who they are, not because of their sexuality.
