I used to think Dante's Peak was the better made, more "mature" of the two volcano flicks from 1997, but after re-watching it Friday night, I'm not so sure anymore. I think I might have to give Volcano another look now.

Volcano was pretty dull and forgettable, save for the admittedly great scene where the firefighter has to jump in the lava.
I wouldn't call Dante's Peak mature or anything, but it was watchable enough.

Volcano was pretty shitty as I remember the last time I saw it 15(?) years ago. I only saw bits and pieces of Dante's Peak but didn't hate it.

Dante's Peak actually had a story. There's no contest.

I gotta go "Dante's Peak."
Always liked Linda Hamilton and thought she got slightly pigeonholed after her (amazing) performance in "T-2." Similarly, I thought Brosnan got sort of an overly harsh reaction to his James Bond. And he was excellent in Mrs. Doubtfire, which isn't easy to do playing opposite Robin Williams! Connery is Bond to me, but Brosnan wasn't bad at all...what he had to work with is another story...
For score fans, both have very interesting and well-thought-out scores and are worth a listen on their own.
But what really sells "Dante's Peak" as the winner for me...Grandma Ruth...we all remember it. Gave me goosebumps just thinking about it

Volcano was such bait & switch marketing.
Was built up as LA/SoCal gonna blow up like a mother, instead we got some lava seeping onto the streets & a bunch of rescue ops. I saw it only once, opening week, so I could be way off.
Dante's Peak was the one about an actual f'n volcano.

Dante's Peak.
Nether was amazing but Volcano sucked and Dante's effects are still amazing.

Felt like emotional manipulation to me, but I can see how it might be disturbing to some.

Of those two, Dante's Peak by a long way.

The thing that bothered me about Dante's Peak is just how badly it tried to ape all of Speilberg's hallmarks. I seriously expected the Jurassic Park theme to swell up when they flew away in the helicopter at the end.

The one featuring one of the most venal grandmothers in cinematic history.

Dantes Peak. It had far better special effects. That pyroclastic cloud at the end is still awe inspiring.
