Armageddon or Deep Impact (both 1998)? Which do you prefer and why?
Both have their moments... Armageddon has more action, better FX, and more star power in that its led by Bruce Willis. But Deep Impact I feel has a greater story. Thoughts?

Armageddon is dumb from the opening scene. And gets dumber as it goes along. no Deep Impact is one of the better disaster movies. yes

I love them both. "Deep Impact" is probably the better film at the end of the day. Both had their share of memorable characters, and "Deep Impact" ups the ante by having the balls to have the planet gets its ass kicked by a fragment of the comet . Not the biggest Elijah Wood fan (he's not bad, just not my favorite), but Robert Duvall balances out the equation for me. The science is wonky in both. Why the hell would two space shuttles launch in such a close distance, Armageddon? Really betting on your rocket scientists and physicists. But it has Bruce Willis, Peter Stormare, Steve Buscemi, and a great song (we all probably got a little fatigued "My Heart Will Go On"-style, but it's a great song at the end of the day). Also William Fichtner, Billy Bob Thornton, and Michael Clarke Duncan. Notice I didn't mention Ben Affleck. He was very good in this and knocked it out of the park playing a brash, young character bucking the rules of a well broken-in Bruce Willis. Stormare's cosmonaut and "I Don't Want to Close My Eyes" are why I gave "Armageddon" my vote. Should be said that "Deep Impact" definitely had the better ending. No kid out of a Norman Rockwell painting in his overalls going to cheer for the astronauts. Even for Michael Bay (who gets much more hate than he deserves) that was pretty on-the-nose. Didn't like the "Americana" tones it was trying to resonate, but I can forgive it because its just a little more fun and doesn't take itself seriously. It knew exactly what it was and had fun with itself. It reminded me of "Independence Day." Another (kinda stupid) story that gave zero fvcks when it came to prioritizing having fun with its absurdity. I could go for ages on the science on both...I'm far from an astronaut, but for starters, projectile weapons (like handguns) are not going to behave the same way in zero-G, robots could be doing half of this work (even at the release date, and for both movies), etc. TLDR: "Deep Impact" = better movie. "Armageddon" = just a little bit more fun. Buscemi and Stormare for the win.

Neither is very good but Armageddon is more entertaining whether as a popcorn movie or "so bad it's good". I don't hate it like I used to years ago.

Armageddon.
Deep Impact could've been a much better film if it didn't have so many dull Tea Leoni moments.

Fie on Armageddon, gung-ho trash. At least Deep Impact has some enjoyable character moments cutting through the cheese. I remember it as being quite watchable, as such things go.

I watch both of them but prefer Deep Impact because it handles the subject seriously.

Armageddon.
Deep Impact isn't all that intelligent, it's not enough of a leap over Armageddon to surpass it's boring parts.
Wasted Robert Duvall and Morgan Freeman. Throw away performances and focused too much on Tei Leona or whatever her name is.
So Armageddon because at least it's fun.

Deep Impact - 8/10 Armageddon - 1/10
Armageddon has extremely irritating characters. I couldn't even finish that movie.

Deep Impact
I’ve never been able to finish Armageddon.
However, Deep Impact is too depressing to watch repeatedly.

The science is wonky on both, but I expect that from Hollywood. As long as the science isn't SOOOO god awful bad that its too much to stretch the imagination... then I'm at least ok with it.
I didn't mention the rest of the cast because they weren't all as big stars as they are today. Bruce WIllis was definitely the heavy hitter at that time, but of course hwo can NOT like the rest of that cast?! Fichtner and Stormare have the best lines: "All the wrong stuff..." "Russian parts, American parts, all made in China!"
In the end Armageddon is probably the more watchable movie because of its faster pace and star power. Also less depressing. Deep Impact, probably the better movie, but not by a huge leap.

I am not a fan of either film but Armageddon is stupid fun. I can enjoy it as such. It's pure popcorn film in the same vein as Independence Day. Loud, fast and eminently watchable.
Deep Impact was not nearly as daring as it could have been and was ultimately a boring film. I didn't care much about any of the characters or the events. It felt hollow.
I'll take the popcorn film over the boring hollow film.

'Deep Impact' but I didn't think 'Armageddon' was terrible.
