Was watching a 1971 movie where someone goes into a room and sees a pair of boots behind a curtain-thinks someone is there--goes to check, and voila, it is just a pair of empty footwear.
Wondering how far back this gag goes, and what variations there have been. I imagine at least one time when someone went to check the shoes it turned out to have someone in them.

Fascinating question–even more so because I can’t really find an answer (yet). The first thing I thought of was Polonius in Hamlet, but of course he is actually behind the curtain. I’m rather surprised that TV Tropes doesn’t have an article about this trope exclusively (there’s one for the Polonius situation, and one for a general “clothes decoy,” but nothing exclusively for this). I’ll try to look into it some more, Primemovermithrax Pejorative. |

It's got to go back to silent movies... and probably to stage productions before that ! As for talkies … I seem to "see" an Abbott and Costello routine with this gag. Where exact-telly ? no idear …  |
