I enjoyed the way both of these films killed off the lead surviving actress of the previous flick and found it quite shocking/a nice surprise. Any other examples out there of a movie who kills off a 'lead' from a previous movie in the opening act of the next? I really lost interest in the Nightmare on Elm Street series; however thought III Dream Warriors was great - somebody correct me if I'm wrong - did they do the same in IV? Kill off the actors/actresses in III? What 'kill' surprised you more?

Friday 2 having Jason go elsewhere to find what's-her-face from the first one really doesn't make any sense at all considering who he is revealed to be later. Halloween 5 kills off a liked character, but not the main one. It's also a mess all around. I think you might be thinking of part 6, which is also a complete mess, but dispatches of its main character from the previous 2 movies relatively early. The movie sucks, but it could certainly have worked better if they would have just ponied up the small amount of extra cash to make it possible for Danielle Harris to come back.

I'm thinking of Rachael's Death in H5 - wasn't she also the lead actress/heorine in distress in H4 - not counting the kid Danielle Harris?

Another example is Hostel 2 (though the survivor in the earlier film was a man)
Not seen H5 in years, but remember it wasn't so great. F13 Pt 2 I saw recently and it was terrible. I forgot that Jason was a bumbling oaf with a bag on his head. Neither really shocked me

Oh ok, yeah she was in Halloween 4, but I'd consider Danielle Harris the lead much more so, and her character is killed of in 6 even though she isn't playing the part, that's what I figured you were referencing.

Although it doesn't occur in the opening act, Maniac Cop 2 kills off the Bruce Campbell and Laurene Landon characters.

Yeah Nightmare on Elm Street 4 does the same.
I guess if I had to choose, Alice dying at the beginning of Friday 2 was probably more shocking. The way they killed Rachel in H5 was stupid AF.

I think Alice's death was more shocking. I never considered Rachel a lead.
Friday II was also the first one to really pull the "kill off the past survivor early on in the sequel" trick. It's kind of a cliche now, and almost always unsatisfying. Other examples not mentioned:
Nute, Hick, Bishop - Alien 3 Cotton - Scream 3 Dan - Nightmare 5 That one girl - Phantasm 3 Paul - Cabin Fever 2 Norma - Halloween H20 Laurie - Halloween Resurrection

I suppose another example could be Lila Loomis (Crane) being killed off in Psycho II.

Like since when does Jason get up on chairs to hide from people? It was too dumb for words. Though, having said that, I love the movie.

I love Halloween...but on this particular poll, I have to go with Friday the 13th part II. As far as the original Halloween series, anything past 2 is complete and utter shit...with the exception of H20, which in the end is rather bland in itself.

I find Rachel's death in Halloween 5 to be far more offensive (not sure about shocking) because most everything else that follows in that movie is garbage. At least Friday the 13th Pt. II remembered to make a good movie after killing off Alice.

I voted for Friday the 13th Part 2 in this poll. It also happens to be an overall better movie IMO.

There were 3 leftovers from Nightmare 3...Kristin, Joey and Kincaid. They killed all 3 in Nightmare 4. Kristin was the closest to the lead of Nightmare 3. Joey had the best death of the 3 tho.
Nancy could also be seen as the lead of Nightmare 1 and Nightmare 3. They killed her in Nightmare 3. But she kind of shows up again in New Nightmare but its all meta and its suppose to be the actress not the character.

Oh and of course how could we all forget about Randy from Scream 2? Total bummer when he got slashed.

Friday the 13th part 2. She was the survivor from the original and she got killed at the start of the first sequel. Rachel wasn't really the lead and it was also a sequel to a sequel.
Neither really shocked me though.
