What's the hardest instrument to play in your experience or simply in your opinion? I am not musical, by the way.
They say with some instruments it's hard to get them to sound good, to get nice tones from them. Like the violin and the French horn.
But to me keyboard instruments look the hardest, especially the piano. 88 keys and most of your fingers have to find the right ones.

String instruments that don't have frets such as the violin look like they'd be difficult to learn. There'd be tons of off notes until you master the proper fingering.

The theremin looks pretty difficult to play.

88 keys and most of your fingers have to find the right ones. Yeah I’ve always wondered how pianists/keyboardists find the right keys, how they know how to start a song without even counting the keys or anything like that.

I'm told the pedal steel guitar is hard to play.

Yeah I’ve always wondered how pianists/keyboardists find the right keys, how they know how to start a song without even counting the keys or anything like that. That's astonishing to me. Pianists can find not only a single note among all those keys, but multiple notes at once, like each finger has a brain. I don't think there are too many other instruments where you play more than one note at the same time. I've seen it done on a violin, but it's uncommon. Just keyboard instruments are like this.

I'm impressed that musicians can often pick their way decently on any instrument. Naw, not really. I play guitar/bass/ukulele/mandolin/banjo/piano at VERY mediocre levels. I lack both the drive and the talent to become a truly accomplished musician. I have known real musicians though. In college I had roommate who was a true musician. He’d just buy shitty horn, concertinas, and string instruments at garage sales or flea markets and just learn them in a day or two. It seems like once you have a grasp on the progression of notes, their sounds, and timing, then learning an instrument just comes down to figuring out which strings/keys/knobs/whatever to press.

You're better than me. I think learning a musical instrument does take a tolerance for repetition, but no amount of repetition did very much to improve me. I agree with your last sentence. Musicians can hear and remember what they want, and they just have to find it. I can't really learn tones. I can't tell what key a song is in, listening to it, though I understand how to represent keys on the printed page.

I've always imagined any keyboard instrument would be the least difficult, as you're basically just pressing keys as opposed to having to physically hold down strings, sometimes with no positioning guide or pressing down on valves while "blowing" a particular way. Of course playing well is another thing.
I would guess something like a saxaphone would be the hardest to at least play reasonably competently.

I never got the hang of my recorder in 3rd grade. Those little holes at the bottom were a complete mystery.

This guy makes it look easy. I never got a really good look at one until this video. So it has foot pedals. Two necks. And so many strings. I'm told the pedal steel guitar is hard to play.

I think violin would be one of the hardest. Being fretless you really need to work on your intonation and because its small, there isn't a lot of room for error.
