It's been 20 years since this trailer first hit theaters and the Internet. When it did, it created a major marketing sensation the likes of which haven't been duplicated since. This was our first glimpse at a new Star Wars film since Return of the Jedi. You had people buy tickets to movies like "Meet Joe Black" just to watch the trailer and then leave the theater before the movie began. You had websites constantly talking about the trailer and dissecting every little image and moment in the trailer. You had news programs devoting time to the coverage of the trailer's release and the hype for The Phantom Menace.
Little did people know how the movie would eventually turn out, but for a time, it created a marketing sensation that had to be experienced to be believed.
Any of you have any memories about first seeing this trailer and/or the major hype surrounding The Phantom Menace before it came out?

All this coverage brings back memories. This video is a perfect capsule of the hype and disappointment people had with The Phantom Menace:

First Star Wars movie in 16 years. Yes, the hype was, and remains, unprecedented. Was impossible to meet expectations but disappointing all the same. Cut forward to 2006 and remember why I didn’t since 1999.

I VHS taped it off the local FOX affiliate, so we could play it over and over and over...

I taped it from Entertainment Tonight or something but did not watch it. I had it playing and listened--and checked it out only after I saw the movie. I should have watched--might have dulled the pain to follow.
There was a PBS making of TPM show which i taped and planned to watch but never bothered.
Lucas was on 60 Minutes before it premiered-pretty confident too.

I saw it then and loved it. Then I saw the movie and loved it. All these years later I still love the film.

That's still one of the greatest trailers ever made. I remember I went to see Wing Commander hoping to see the trailer beforehand, but I don't think it played. I actually did enjoy Wing Commander though haha.

Good old Samuel L. Jackson sleep walking through his lines even in the trailer. Then we got glimpses of Jar Jar which destroyed the film. That and poor CGI even for the time. The trailer should have clued me in but I was there on opening night and it was horrible. I still went through the motions and saw the other two films in the trilogy. I fell asleep through Attack of the Clones. They were that bad. A big reason why my love for Indiana Jones went through the roof after this debacle. I always enjoyed Indy a little better than Star Wars but the prequels solidified it. Even the semi-crap Crystal Skulls didn't diminish my love for Indy. Both of those film series were my favorite films growing up and a key part of my youth. One seriously faltered and the other remains cherished.

Anakin should've been the introvert we saw in that teaser. He should've been a troubled child who only broke out later because of dark temptations via Palpatine. Instead he's a f'n McKid who never shuts up.

I remember during a promotional interview with Liam Neeson at the time, he revealed he’d never met Harrison Ford.
Then three years later they both starred in K-19: The Widowmaker.

Well do I remember the hype. Despite being in my teens, I was only vaguely familiar with the Star Wars franchise at the time and it would be another 2 years before I got round to seeing any of those movies. As a result, the build-up to the movie didn't mean much to me. I was much more excited about the pending release of Star Trek: Insurrection. Which in itself turned out to be awful.

I was too young to understand the hype nor knew what Star Wars was. I did see the teaser trailer years later, and aside from the three second clip of Jar Jar Bink getting zapped, it still holds up and gives me goosebumps when the theme song starts.

I remember seeing the trailer for the first time..years after TPM came out and thinking "yeah, a lot better than the movie".
My first memory of TPM was seeing the movie itself in the theater even though my family was dirt poor and none of us really Star Wars fans. So yeah, must of had a lot of hype.

I do. I remember thinking ‘is that Predator?’ At the very beginning because of the clicking noises.

Still better than Attack of the Clone, IMO, even if they both sucked.

When Darth Maul first appears I had nerdgasm! Later when Darth Maul re-appears with the double sided lightsaber I nerdgasmed again. To gasm twice in such a short time is beyond even my abilities and I was much younger then! One cant be expected to gasm that much back to back within three minutes. That's a gasm every minute and a half.
Best trailer... maybe ever!
Then I actually saw the movie... oh well... you cant win 'em all...

That trailer was amazing. The hype was insane. I remember seeing the images everywhere. I even collected the Pepsi cans because they had like 20 different ones, each with a different character. It was the only time in my life that I bought Diet soda.

And it's funny how the PREVIEW was better than Joe Black.

Darth Maul should have lived past the one movie and he should not have been taken out that way. He just stands there and watches the guy flip over him where he had the higher ground? C'mon!
