Although he will deny it, had all of the players eligible for selection been available, he wouldn't have picked the team that played last night. Injuries and other call-offs accounted for
Kieran Tierney Charlie Mulgrew John McGinn Matt Ritchie John Soutar Steven Naismith Others
So what does he do the next time he has a match? Play last night's heroes or make changes?
The performances against Israel, of one or two players, were slightly worrying.
Callum Paterson plays up front for Cardiff although he was a much sought after fullback with Hearts. He looked like a headless chicken in the early stages of last night's game. As he did against Albania. David Bates was OK but McKenna was the real central defender. Callum McGregor is a good wee "water carrier" (as Eric would put it) but he couldn't tackle a fish supper. He looked lost when the Israelis got the upper hand in the last half hour. Steven Fletcher is a good target man, excellent in the air, but doesn't score too many goals.
I would be tempted to bring Tierney in at right back, although I think he is a better left back than Robertson. Bates will get better with experience but in a pressure situation I would prefer Mulgrew or Soutar McGinn is a competitive ball winner and we needed that kind of player in midfield last night when the Israelis got on top in the second half. I'd keep Fletcher because we don't have a goalscoring centre-forward, as we wait for Griffiths to return (if he ever does). Naismith is a willing soul, like Fletcher but is average, at best, in the air and Scotland's second goal was down to Fletcher's headed flick-on to Christie.
What say you, Eck?
