If looking for trouble, they found it in John J. Rambo. Hell, he even tries to surrender after that asshole Gault fell out of the helicopter. They respond by shooting at him.

Yeah it is a dumb movie in a lot of ways.
The National Guardsmen scenes appear more like a comedy skit.

When you say “surrender,” it doesn’t mean “shoot”.

One thing I've always wondered about: When the sheriff played by Brian Dennehy is on the roof and Rambo shoots up at him through the ceiling and wounds him, did he get hit in the franks and beans?

Returning Vietnam war vets got absolutely no respect. This film just emphasized that fact.

A cop's main job is not protecting the public; it is population control. A guy with long hair walks into a small town, is ordered into a police car, then driven to the outskirts of town and told to keep walking. Is that law enforcement? Nope. Just getting people who don't like them out of sight. It what cops have always done. It is their main job today. The penalty for Rambo fighting back is death. That is why cops were shooting while he was surrendering. I was totally on Rambo's side.

Those cops really were just a bunch of thugs. Rambo did nothing to deserve the kind of treatment they meted out to him. I really felt for the guy.

Is is true they got no respect? I was watching Welcome Home Soldier Boys, 1971 and they had none of that spitting on soldiers stuff. Same with the tv films the Forgotten Man or Welcome Home, Johnny Bristol.
Same with Rolling Thunder (William Devane and Tommy Lee Jones gets a big homecoming celebration). How common could it have been?
I think Rambo just needed a haircut.

At least they made John more likeable. It wasn't until the sequel where he went off the rails. First Blood is still the best in the series & I'd say relatively underrated.

For the last 30 to 35 years, I've always worn my hair as a number one.
Two days ago, I changed to a number zero for a change of pace.

When we were kids we would shout "get a hair cut you hippies!" at teenagers on the street. Then they would run after us and we would close the door and they would bang on the other side. Scary but cheap entertainment.
I cut my own hair as it saves me a fair bit in expenses.

Well, I've always shaved in the shower to save on mess.
Now, I just shave a bit more.
But it only saves me $15 every 2 or 3 months.
