The tiny bit I've seen looks good. Has a a great laughing while hurting inside type laugh. As an actor he's pretty solid, and toes the line between sympathetic and threatening very well. I'm sold.

Yeah I was pretty skeptical at first but the more I hear about it (and the test reel footage ), it looks like it might actually be really entertaining . Hopefully Todd Phillips delivers the goods.

You're joking right? He was amazing as Commodus. He seemed too beta. He doesn't have much gravitas. Richard Harris really outclassed him and boy did the dialogue suck.
Crowe was right-the dialogue was fucking awful.

That was the point. He wanted him to be beta in comparison to Maximus to show who deserves to be ruler. He's a weasel. Great acting by Phoenix. |

Then again, I don't think Crowe is the most charismatic actor either.

Phoenix's Joker looks a hell of a lot better than Jared Leto's was. So that's a step in the right direction at least.
That said, part of me feels like it's still too soon for another Joker incarnation. The Dark Knight is still only 10 years old. By contrast, we had an almost 20-year gap between Nicholson's Joker and Ledger's.

I mean he has that weak speaking voice that is all too common in recent times, it is especially noticeable in these toga dramas because the standard is Shakespeare-trained actors for it. Phoenix has an America accent and he tries to slip into a British accent with Harris but then slips out of it again (Costner-style).

I thought it would underpeform, but it only has a $55 million budget (waaaay less than most super hero films) so it will probably do OK. If this film takes off, expect to see a Lex Luthor film next

Okay, there is a difference between not playing the role the way you think he should, and doing a good.job acting. I don't think Heath Ledger looked or sounded like The Joker I imagine, but he was amazing in the role. |
