Juice it up with enough of the garlic/ginger/chilli paste (I double up - that stuff is fecking golden) and you're looking at much the same outcome but with a world-class flavour experience beforehand.

Pound-for-pound there is more sugar in onion than sugar-cane. True story. Like, for instance, in this chana massala I keep hearing so much about... You spend the time to caramelise the onions thoroughly and you're on to a winner.
