this is the first year I am here (in the US) for Christmas. For all those previous years I would fly to visit my parents in Europe or travel. I tend to enjoy tacky things and am feeling quite American when it comes to decorations and would love to decorate my flat with xmas things that are typical for the US. I will openly admit I am on Martins side of things here. But as you may have noticed I hate spending money and it takes me forever to chose what to spend it on, so what would you recommend I get next to a Christmas three, like 3-4 items? Santa? Talking santa? Some of the deers? Some of his little helpers? Santas hat? Socks? Generic Christmas lights? Stars? If reindeers, which ones, or a whole set of them? Light projecting something christmasy on the wall? Canes? Christmas train? Also, where would one go for affordable Christmas decorations? All of this is for indoors, for one room. Dont be afraid to get tacky and kytchy with your tips.Thank you. Ps - I am not religious so for me this is more about playing with the decorations and colors in my place and experiencing something new. I grew up in a family where we had the tree and then baby jesus in Bethlehem, its kinda dreary. I wanna go joyous and colorful!! And I am also getting a sexy santas helper outfit, that cant hurt. I love those.

Lights and wreaths are a good choice. And an elf costume for your teddy bear.

If you are ever into auctions, and I don't know how common they are where you are, those can be places to pick up tons of Christmas stuff from estates or downsizing. Sometimes it is pretty kitschy, sometimes there are some fine and expensive things mixed in. This time of year it is more expensive, as others will be looking for the same things. It should still be going for quite a bit less than retail. Then of course there is Goodwill or other donation centers.
Lights are cheap new, so just go with those from Home Depot, Target or wherever, as old ones are often a pain to make work.

And another thing about lights: The LED lights rated for outdoors are freaking bright. Maybe ones rated for indoors are not so bright.

Watch the "temperature" of clear led lights, some are very shrill and unpleasant indoors. I prefer the soft white. Here's a chart that relates the "temperature" to the color of clear lights. You can't just grab a box of clear lights anymore, lol:

If you're looking for cheap and kitschy, then yard sales, rummage sales, and thrift stores might be good places to find this stuff. They always seem to have a plethora of ornaments and other decorations.

NoraDo you have those 'EVERYTHING IN THE STORE IS ONE DOLLAR" stores by you ? If it's cheap and on the tacky side you want … that's a place to start !
Problem with them is, since the prices on stuff isn't marked you keep thinking "I wonder how much these cost" and then you wonder if anyone else is wondering about the same thing

Sulla I have a "tacky" garden and wanted to get some orange and black flamingoes but was waiting until the half-off after Halloween sale …. waited too long and watched some greedy lady take the last ones in the store so will have to try again next year. I keep collecting those white deer with none functioning lights from free boxes at yard sales … they are super at sunrise when the sun lights them up !

Before your post I didn't know they made Halloween flamingos. I just googled pics of them, though. You're in the northern US, right? I bet they look funnier in the snow.
