Raiders of the Lost Ark was still my favorite movie. Mixed feelings about having recently seen The Matrix Revolutions, oh-so super excited for The Return of the King next month. If that movie disappoints, all hope is lost. Also recently finished The Evil Dead trilogy by renting a VHS copy of the second film.

I was watching a lot of "throw away" type films with my girlfriend soon to be wife just to do something on a date night. Biker Boyz and Darkness Falls comes to mind. We'd probably hit the movies just about every other weekend and just see whatever was playing at a particular time (usually after dinner). My favorite films at the time were about the same they are now, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Lawrence of Arabia. I was pretty pumped to see Return of the King too, it was a good one. Pirates of the Caribbean was a surprise for me, I enjoyed it. 28 Days Later stayed with me for quite some time, it was a unique twist on the "zombie" genre. I bought the soundtrack right after seeing the film. Some other films I remember enjoying at the time was Tears of the Sun and the Last Samurai. I was starting to build up a pretty decent DVD collection by this time too, my VHS stuff was rapidly being replaced.

Spending a lot of money on DVDs & Blus. Around 2010 is when I dialed way back. Way. Back.

Spending a lot of money on DVDs & Blus. Around 2010 is when I dialed way back. Way. Back. I've been trying to lately, I really have. But I tell you what, this is the golden age for catalog titles on bluray. Between Criterion, Olive, Twilight Time, and Kino Lorber they are producing a huge amount of classic film. The transfers are excellent too. I keep trying to quit, but these "boutique" labels make it really hard. I rarely buy "current" films on bluray anymore though. I don't remember when I finally bought a bluray player but I know it was shortly after HD-DVD finally dropped out of the picture. I didn't want to jump on one bandwagon due to memories of the Betamax/VHS war when I was a kid.

Oscars that year, and my opinions...
Actor in a Leading Role Winner Adrien Brody The Pianist (all he did was play the Piano) should've been Nicolas Cage Adaptation (he played two disparate roles, both excellently!)
Actor in a Supporting Role Winner Chris Cooper Adaptation (all he did was wear fake teeth) should've been Christopher Walken Catch Me If You Can (hwo was better in that than he had been in years!)
Actress in a Leading Role Winner Nicole Kidman The Hours (All she did was wear a fake nose) Shouldve been Julianne Moore Far from Heaven
Actress in a Supporting Role Winner Catherine Zeta-Jones Chicago (how the hell was she supporting? She was a CO-lead in that movie!)
Directing Winner The Pianist Roman Polanski (ok I guess) Shouldve been Martin Scorsese Gangs of New York (What a massive undertaking that movie was!)
Best Picture Winner Chicago (ok)

I had exactly the same movies in my top 40, except The Return of the King.

I was just starting to gradually replace my VHS tapes with DVDs. Today I don't have a single VHS tape in my collection, it's all DVD/blu-rays now.

I was 11-12.
That was the first year I watched the Oscars that I remember. Mainly because Eminem was nominated.
I was losing my mind over all the horror movies released. Final Destination 2, the Texas Chainsaw remake, Freddy vs Jason, Jeepers Creepers II - I saw all of them in the theater. The last one I saw by myself. I begged the usher to let me in even though it was R and he did.
But it was mainly the year of The Matrix. I liked Matrix Reloaded, didn't like Matrix Revolutions.

2003?...
Well Braveheart was no doubt my favorite, since it's pretty much held that spot consistently since i saw it circa 1995-96. Monsters Inc. and Ice Age had given me hope in animated films again. I still didn't understand what was so great about the LOTR movies...and i wouldn't, until i saw the Return of the King years later. Halle Berry had decent boobs but the attention she was getting seemed a little overblown. I still owe a woman i know 7 dollars that i refused to pay her after seeing Saw, since i hated it. I saw her this past weekend...she bought me a shot. I'm still up on the deal. Gladiator was everyones favorite movie. I thought it was good.

At twelve years old, my favorite movies were Freddy vs Jason and the Star Wars prequels.
