About 8 doors down I have these hipster neighbors. They seem OK, and asked me if I wanted to get high once. Problem is, they have Christmas lights up all year. Only along the front roof. But they are pretty large lights and visible all year. Problem is, they never turn them on at Christmas time, or any time at all. I don't know if I should offer to help take them down, or help plug them in.

Does your neighborhood have an association? I'm guessing not.

It is none of your business unless you are friends or family. I have a car that is not currently running parked out in the driveway for months in front of the garage where there is room for it. I could jump start it and back it in but haven't gotten around to it yet. If it bothers any of the neighbors, tough shit.

Remember what you were saying about people in the 'burbs, Art, people like Skip, people who mow their lawn for the 800th time, and then SNAP? WELL, THAT'S US. IT'S NOT THEM, THAT'S US. WE'RE the ones who are vaulting over the fences, and peeking in through people's windows. We're the ones who are THROWING GARBAGE IN THE STREET, AND LIGHTING FIRES. WE'RE THE ONES WHO ARE ACTING SUSPICIOUS AND PARANOID, ART. WE'RE THE LUNATICS. US. IT'S NOT THEM. It's us.

C4? "America's #1 selling pre-workout supplement" I do NOT have enough time to work out enough to kick their asses by Christmas. It's already November 27th and I'm a good month away from being in real ass kicking condition.

Mind your business. Instead, go get high with them...

Well, the neighborhood is going downhill. A few years ago a homeowner's insurance company shot a commercial featuring about 20 houses from my neighborhood, because they were all nicely maintained and nice houses. Now down my block there are 3 of them in a row which were in the commercial, and used to look really nice. Now they have tall weeds growing everywhere, weeds growing through the porch stairs, piles of junk mail, and flags all worn out and twisted around the flagpoles. There is junk piling up at the top of their driveways. But, they all have nice new cars. Their cars are all between $30,000 and $65,000. I can surely understand when some of these pigs can't afford to do something like get a new front porch installed; but pulling weeds for 20 minutes one afternoon is free, so is removing a twisted up faded flag, or picking up all of the junk mail and fliers in their driveway. It looks terrible, and I have seen these people and they are not elderly or handicapped, or appear to be away from the house for extended periods.

These are your personal opinions and you're perfectly entitled to them.
However, others may also have their own personal opinion that they are also entitled to.
At the end of the day, the only thing you may have an absolute right to is moving elsewhere.
PS - I never pull weeds. Once a year I pay a guy $100 AUD to take everything back to as close to bare-earth as is practical. The rest of the time, I ignore what's outside.

I wish that was an option! In my area you can grow a 15 ft. weed "tree" in one summer if you have the wrong thing growing. Some of the nastier types have huge aggressive root systems. First they roots will choke out the nice trees, then they will hit the waste/water lines and you'll get waste water in your basement, then if they hit the foundation of the house it is big trouble. My one neighbor racked up a $15,000 bill and had to get her whole yard dug up and all of her lines replaced. Still won't pull a weed and currently has 20 ft. weed trees growing right above our lines. When we're risking shit in my basement it's a little more than just some Christmas lights pissing me off. I would take shoveling 18" of snow in -12C weather before I would want to spend the afternoon pulling weeds in 36C and super humid weather any day. But pumping shit out of my basement and looking at Christmas lights on houses all year round is straight up depressing.

I live in the driest state in the driest continent, but things still manage to grow. The trees from the neighbours on one side of me reach over to the neighbours on the other side of me - and I live on a quarter acre block.
However, I don't have a basement. In fact, I think they're fairly rare in my country. And as the house is on stilts - very short ones - there isn't really a traditional foundation that can be affected by the root systems.
And as I keep my blinds shut, it doesn't bother me what my neighbours do with their Christmas decorations.

I just found it peculiar that they keep their lights up all year round, but don't turn them on during Christmas. And my entire metro area is a cleared out swampland. It's not exactly the Bayou because we can easily hit -25C in the winter though.

For example, the last time I put up a Christmas tree, was back in about 2003 or 2004. It stayed up for 3 or 4 years straight, maybe a little longer. When I took it down and sold it at a second-hand shop.
I haven't bothered with that sort of thing since.

I kinda get it. It makes me sad when I see people not take care about their property when its something that could be easily taken care of. That bugs me too. Maybe not christmas lights year around but throwing/dropping/leaving trash around kinda angers me. the streets in major cities in the US seem to be so much more polluted with trash than what I see in Europe. Not only it looks bad but its so bad for the quality of living of everybody, attracting rodents and bugs and providing a happy place for them to breed in.
If I were you I wouldnt probably go tell your neighbors about their lights, but if there was a chance to get involved in a local improvement activity where various things would be addressed then maybe I would include text supportive of upkeeping ones property on a common flyer or something like that? But you know, an eye sore is really just an eye sore after all…and who knows. maybe they do like it the way it is and its not just laziness...

I was going to say something dismissive and possibly even make funny you for your initial post, but I understand what you are saying now. If you have a homeowners association, you can try them. If not, you can try to call the Township and get them on something; some have rules about grass that is too long, maybe their roof is unstable, etc. Other than that, I'm not sure there's a lot you can do. If they're not hurting anyone, just try to ignore them.
