I thought it was a good character study. No action and an overload of meaningless dialog drags it down though. Although I'll probably watch it again I can't see why it would be an Oscar candidate.

It's a relatively demanding and mature picture where you must actively listen and understand the underlying character themes. It's definitely not for everyone.

The film does have virtue, it just don't feel it was worthy of all the undue critical praise it got. It was an experimental film that had Keaton as a draw card, but I found the characters were meh and the theatre setting would have been alienating for many. Its structure was also flawed and characters at the start suddenly just dissipated later on as if they were no longer relevant. A man having a spiritual and inner conflict crisis could make for interesting and riveting cinema, this wasn't one of them. It was no Fight Club. If I want to watch a classic film about the theater, I need go no further than All About Eve - 50'.
