It seemed to me like that tribe's decision to abstain from society is a choice. Political reform could be looming for Wakanda, and I think it would show maturing and progression from T'Challa (who's been maturing steadily since Civil War), but I also think society, real world and the world within the Marvel universe is filled with strange customs that are considered normal. Wakanda has a king, but so does Liechtenstein.
Thor Ragnarok, they have gladiator battles on Sakaar for public amusement; aesthetics aside, is it so removed from gladiator fighting in the Roman empire, or even modern day UFC fighting? It seems like there's some shared DNA there.
I think that seeing racism in Black Panther tows a line between fitting one's own perception of African stereotypes into Wakandan behavior, as opposed to letting Wakandan culture speak for itself as the sum of its parts.
That said, if and when people don't like Black Panther it's unlikely the internet will change their mind. I liked it though. Mos definitely.
