Link: www.imdb.com/title/tt0015881/?ref_=nv_sr_3(Director - Erich von Stroheim) Some say this is one the best films ever made. In IMDB this has only 7,9/10 rating and only 7255 votes. But What members think about it?

I think even the short version is an ordeal. Thank god they lost the director's cut.

Definitely a classic. A powerful story, well filmed.
I would say Von Stroheim overreached, though. It's not going to be very often a person wants to spend 3+ hours in a movie theater.

I liked it a lot, but had a problem with the dialog screens staying up forever. Maybe people back then had a harder time reading. I would read them over and over until they finally transitioned. Wish I could have shortened them.

I loved that movie, I saw the 4 hour version partially restored with stills, it was beautiful. After I saw the movie, I went out and got the original book to read, McTeague, and you can definitely understand how the original cut was so long, you don't want to miss a detail.

I would watch a John Huston version of Greed. Von Stroheim is a madman. He's like an early Michael Bay version of the German scientist with his huge camera as a "recording instrument." The German CB Demille?

Perhaps the greatest silent film, one of my favorites. It's a shame Stroheim was so insane no one would hire him again, because he was brilliant.
