Did anyone see the beyond tone deaf Gameday segment about Tua, where they talked about Tua’s dad hitting with a belt when he didn’t play well?! It was seriously unsettling how ESPN just glossed over this, Tua’s family looked extremely dysfunctional, his dad is the worst kind of sports parent, but ESPN just laughes it off with Desmond Howard joking that Tua’s dad is “the Hawaiian Joe Jackson”!! I don’t know how ESPN thought it would be a good idea to air this and then joke about it, they are a joke of a network, I’ve never liked Gameday but this was a new low.

I saw it. completely agree. it was uncomfortable. didn't seem like it was just how he played either - it seemed like if he disappointed his dad in anything in life. my jaw kind of dropped - I get parents are free to discipline their child in a certain matter and some believe in 'spankings' - but for some reason the way Tua was talking I got an Adrien Peterson impression out of everything.

Agreed, it was disturbing, and I was incredibly disturbed by how ESPN glossed over the whole thing, it showed that they have no depth and don’t really care, they just don’t want to upset or offend anyone so they don’t actually hold people accountable. It seems like Tua’s dad is a psycho religious fanatic and I hope Tua is okay, he’s a terrific QB and seems like a good guy but growing up in an environment like that can really fuck someone up.

It wasn't a white guy doing the abuse. Trust me, if it was a white dad from the South or Midwest, ESPN would be saying we need to have a "national discussion" about it.....

Yeah, you probably have a point. ESPN is just incredibly hypocritical with how they deal with stuff like this, it varies depending on the situation, ESPN is just like all establishment media, they don’t want to upset those in power, in this case, they didn’t want to ruffle feathers with people at Alabama by exposing that one of their stars has an abusive psycho father. But why they aired it and laughed about it instead of just cutting it is beyond me.
