Joni Mitchell: Sensitive, introspective Folk==>Folk/Pop (with catchy riffs and tunes)==>Jazz-inflected-pop (her most financially successful period, I believe)==>full-on avant garde jazz That's only through The Hissing of Summer Lawns. Seems to me that around that point, she abandoned melody in favor of noodling...but of course, YMMV. Good call.
