I’m not sure whom I should ask about this. I just got a PM on Reddit asking if an editor named Carolyn Berardino could use a real-life incident I’d written there (I’ve written about it here, too, if anyone remembers my Venice/San Michele ghost story) in an e-book of real-life scary stories taken from Reddit. Without thinking about it, I said, “Sure,” but then she sent me a whole bunch of stuff and a release saying I don’t expect any financial compensation, etc. Then she said she wanted to use my real name, or (if I didn’t want that) just my first name. I’m not going to do it unless it’s under some kind of a pseudonym. Not sure what to do with this. I Googled her company (“Fearful Symmetry”), supposedly based in Ohio, but it’s based out of a PO Box. I couldn’t find much other than a company of that name apparently existing in an Ohio county tax report. I just thought I’d say, “OK,” she’d use my username, and that was it. Now I feel like it’s getting weird. What do you guys think?

I don't think you should do it without compensation.

I don’t think you should do it without compensation. I mean, I wasn’t really worrying about that, but then I never expected compensation–I never expected this at all. But I’m fine with their putting it in there–it’s a true story, not a piece of fiction or anything–I just don’t want my real name on it, and I’m curious about the release and not finding anything about the company.

I read the fine print in the release and it says I give permission to use “my scary stories,” not “this one story.” I’m opting out of this.

Considering you can't find any info on the company, I wouldn't feel comfortable using my real name either, first or last. A username should suffice.
"Berardino" seems an odd name. It looks as if someone left out the "n" as in "Bernardino".

I did find a “ Carolyn Berardino” [sorry, it was “Carolyn,” not “Caroline”] in Ohio, but she’s a hairstylist…

But hey, you'll want to save that scary story for your autobiography, right?

If you ask for compensation they'll back out, so forget about that. If you're getting the heebies, for whatever reason, then you should back out.

As Sulla pointed out, the n missing in the name seems odd and the fact that you can't find any other info too.
Pseudonym or wait for another shot at fortune.

Salzmankall in all it seems to have been a less bizarre message than some that are sent and received these days … was going to vote RUN FOR THE HILLS But I see that the decision has already been made. I hear that the hills are alive with the sound of music this time'o'year so it should be nice there !

What do you guys think? hey, PM me the release if u want to, i can review and let u know if its legaly ok / advisable for u to sign or what changes i would propose. also, depending on what exactly she wants to use it for and how (it does seem like a commercial project), i would suggest u get compensated. either way - if u end up still not feeling comfortable with what she is proposing - dont do it edit: oh o see, decision already made... nevermind then good u caught the “stories” fine print.
