Probably because they were campaigned as supporting by the studios. I think the placing in supporting is based on the likelihood of them winning an Oscar as opposed to being nominated as a lead. it's been many years since the Oscars last nominated joint leads from the same movie. I believe Thelma & Louise in the early 1990s was the last time.

This has to be the most abysmal list of movies I’ve ever seen in an awards season.

I'm surprised Bohemian Rhapsody wasn't slipped into the Musical category. On that note, this is one sh*tty years for movies.
Also, Claire Foy got in for First Man? Are you kidding? Her accent was awful!

Her accent was awful! I don't have a problem with her accent (didn't even notice anything wrong tbh) and I still don't think she deserves a nomination. I have never been picky over accents anyway. It is the performance underneath the accent that matters to me most. I do think she gives a good performance though, just not Oscar worthy.

Every Awards commits category fraud almost every year. It's nothing new. Have you been living under a rock for the past 70 years?

If you're playing an American, and I keep hearing your English slip in, I think it matters. That's just me.

Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips constantly goes in and out with his Boston accent but every other aspect of his performance is brilliant imo. That part trumps the accent work by a mile for me. Like I said though, I didn't even notice Foy's English accent.

I just think pointing out category fraud has become very redundant. It is so common it should just be expected and Adam Driver is borderline imo. I don't have a problem with his placement and I even consider him supporting.

Mahershala Ali, “Green Book”

This is a rare case where there isn't really a true answer. Whether someone says he's co-lead or supporting, I can understand where they're coming from. DR. SHIRLEY doesn't appear until several minutes have passed, while TONY is in every scene. Since TONY has changed a lot by the end while DR. SHIRLEY hasn't changed that much, one could argue the story was the former's personal journey.
