Im asking this because I loved the New Beauty and beast but hatted Emma Watson as Belle and felt Dan Stevens was a little underwhelming as the beast.
But on the the other hand I loved the new arrangements of the old songs, how the objects came to life in this version. They were voiced very nicely and the musical numbers were fantastic with great style, Gaston and Le Fou were really good and it made me very happy they didn't changed much from the story and kept this almost shot by shot the same.
Id say my score is an 8.5/10 despite how much I disliked Emma as Belle i felt like only had two expressions it reminded me Kristen Stewart in Twilight and her dancing was so stiff.
my sisters tell me it doesn't make sense that I loved a movie where I didn't like the main star but I thought the good stuff at the end had more weight than Emma's horrible take on belle.

It depends on how much Of an impact the star has on the film.
I didn't hate Emma as Belle but I do think the original Belle was far better.
The production overall is great though and so their parts, despite being the leads, were superseded by the overall production.

It's hated, not hatted, illiterate moron. Well, you're just a bundle of pleasantness. In general, I don't bother with films when I don't like the leading actors. I haven't seen a Tom Cruise movie since 1998.

However, when I was finally roped into it, I loved it. If you hate Tom Cruise, you get to see him die over and over again. If you like Tom Cruise, well, it's a good movie.

i've got a weird thing with Michael Cera's face and my urge to punch it but Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a favorite of mine. of course it might help that i don't think his character was supposed to be entirely relatable there.

The production overall is great though and so their parts, despite being the leads, were superseded by the overall production. Yeees the production and the supporting cast was so good that I don't mind not liking the main couple and besides so beauty and the beast had a great story. So the good balances the bad and still makes a very fun flick. If you keep faithful to the cartoon or hell even the original tale there is not much to loose. It's almost a no brainer of a good film. I even liked very much the one with Vincent Cassel and Lea Seydux and the budget was quite limited. Beauty and the beast is one of the greatest fairytales and put that with the Disney songs by Alan Menken and you have a Winner. I most say with a whole different story I enjoyed Mamma Mia because of the great songs and the singing was horrible. So im a sucker of a musical with catchy tunes Another one in that style was Rock of Ages. In that one the singing was good but the story was on the level of the worst Glee episodes and still enjoyed it because I liked the songs.

Nicholas Cage used to make my teeth ache and I almost did not see The Rock or Moonstruck just because he was in them. BOTH are good pictures, worlds apart but both worth seeing. He is still cringeworthy in Peggy Sue Got Married though.

sarizi guess it probably depends on how much someone dislikes a particular actor/actress on how much of a negative effect that will have on the overall movie. just quickly looking through My Favorite Movies, which is 199 movies, i don't see any movie that features someone in a leading role that i noticeably dislike. but then again there is not many actors/actresses i actually dislike as the vast majority are generally neutral-to-positive for me (some are more in the neutral-to-negative side of things though). so if someone is just okay-ish (like passable but not really someone you go out of your way to see or not really a name you pay much attention to) i feel if the movie itself is good enough that will overpower the acting/their lack of a strong screen presence. but there is at least one movie amongst My Favorite Movies that has an actress i generally don't care for but she's not a major role in the movie which is The Aviator (2004) with Cate Blanchett (or like i call her... Cate BLANDchett). there is not many i avoid on their presence alone even though there are some who if they have a leading role in a movie (like where they are largely the core of the movie etc) ill largely avoid their movies. so with that said... when it comes to the basic topic of, "Is it possible to love a movie even if you hatted the star?" ; going strictly by your wording (key words 'love'(top spec movie(say 9/10 or 10/10)) and 'hate'(major dislike)) i would have to say it's very unlikely if not impossible especially given you put the word STAR there to which means that actor/actress has a major role in the movie. there might be a slight chance though if that person i dislike is paired with someone else as sorta a co-lead and the other person has a pretty strong screen presence to partially counter the negative persons etc. but with that said... given the volume of people out there i would not be surprised if some people would answer YES to your question in the topic but i can't imagine that would be common as i would assume that would be in the minority especially if someone is not easily pleased to any higher degree with movies in general. @weirdraptor To avoid Cruise movies is to miss out on some quality movies as i feel there is not a single actor (or actress) out there who can challenge his overall filmography quality as he's got the highest volume of movies i score a 7 or higher of anyone out there @ 13 movies (which makes him the safest all around bet for me when it comes to watching a good movie on a actor/actresses name alone) which are... 1.Jerry Maguire (1996) - 9/10 2.The Color of Money (1986) - 8/10 3.Interview With The Vampire (1994) (the #1 vampire/horror themed movie hands down) 4.Mission Impossible (1996) - 7.5-8/10 -.Mission Impossible III (2006) -.Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015) -.Risky Business (1983) -.War of the Worlds (2005) 9.Rain Man (1988) 10.Top Gun (1986) - 7-7.5/10 11.Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) - 7/10 --.Edge of Tomorrow (2014) 13.Valkyrie (2008) - 6.5-7/10 there is more i like beyond those thirteen but i used the 7 or higher standard as anything that score a 7 or higher makes it amongst My Favorite Movies which currently contains 199 movies. but outside of the bold text... i agree with the initial part of your statement in that i typically avoid movies that have actors/actresses i don't care for unless the movie has subject matter i like and the trailer is good and might even be paired with a decent director etc. also, it partially depends on how much of a role the actor/actress has that i don't care for to.

I can't say I agree with this assessment of Cruise's career. I haven't had the desire to see anything he's been in, because none of it appeals to me.

I have never hated an actor\actress.
I have hated the character of the actor\actress.

It's impossible for me to even like a film if I hate the lead performance.

I actually like it better when they wear hats. Especially when women wear hats. A woman in a hat or cap is almost as sexy as a woman with a pony tail.

I can't stand Will Ferrell, yet I enjoyed Elf. Thus, it is possible to love a movie even if you hated the star.

Maybe I'm wrong but you are talking about hating a performance and not the actor in general right?
I ask because I notice that many people here seem to be confusing the two, though the two may be the same in some people's cases. I am one of the people who doesn't hate any actor and dislikes only a handful. There are many I am indifferent to but that's not the same thing.
Ironically Emma Watson is one of the few actors I can't stand though. But even so, I think she is good in Noah.

Yeah i love spring breakers but not any actors in at all. I don't like any of the female cast in general either but I think they are all solid in Spring Breakers.
I guess my question is...do you hate their performances in this movie?
