A pretty fun, cool little slasher horror with some groundhog day aspects thrown in for good measure. I enjoyed it quite a bit. If you havent heard its about a college girl who's a total bitch, who gets killed on her birthday and wakes up over and over again reliving that same day with all her previous memories. She tries to solve the riddle of who the killer is and survive the night, only to fail over and over. Starts off kind of creepy. The initial scene between her and the killer actually had a solid amount of suspense. It got a little lighthearted after that tho, with her even joking about her demise as it happens a few times. I enjoyed it. Its pretty short, clearly doesn't take itself too seriously and has a few fun kills...tho most of them are just stabby stabby. Its not the smartest movie in the world. If you're looking for realistic problem solving this is not that kind of a movie. But if you just want to watch some masked killer stalk a hot co-ed...this is it. I thought Jessica Rothe was gorgeous...almost distractingly so. The supporting cast was ok but nobody really stood out.
Looking forward to the sequel, even if its just more of the same...which it looks like it will be.

Great review. I would have to agree on most points. I also hope the sequel is any good if not copying what’s been done the first time.

I just saw this on TV. It didn’t seem like my cup of tea when it came out, but I noticed it got pretty good reviews both from critics and on here, so I decided to give it a try. Happy I did, it’s a fun little b-movie—not especially memorable, but definitely enjoyable (and diverting, in these corona-ridden times). Took its plagiarizing- Groundhog- Day premise in unexpected directions, which was nice (the cop scene was a highlight), and though the identity of the killer was blindingly obvious from the beginning, one detail was a welcome surprise: The roommate originally planned to poison her with the cupcake! I didn’t see that coming, which infuriates me because the filmmakers dangle that cupcake in front of us nearly the whole time. I loved the lead: she’s spunky, fun, and effortlessly likable. She even emotes pretty well (the scene with the dad didn’t make me cringe), which is pretty rare in these kinds of movies, and the scene where she takes on the serial killer in the hospital left me cheering for her. If they ever attempt a Nancy Drew movie for the umpteenth time, she’d be a great choice for Nancy. Anyone know what else she’s in? Problems? It’s a pretty silly script, but that’s part of its charm. Really, my biggest problem is that it’s not scary. Not in the slightest, and I’m sorta a wimp (and proud!) with horror movies. I’ve never seen a horror flick, in fact, with so few scares. As you noted, Marv , that scene where she first confronts the killer is suspenseful, but that’s about it. Also, many of the plot threads don’t really go anywhere, and as noted the twist is also obvious. But it’s fun, and I had a good time watching it. A pleasant surprise.

The sequel was ok in a more of the same kind of way. But it kinda replaced the horror elements with science fiction.

This does sound like a neat little slasher with a cool premise. I'll check it out if I get the chance.

The first is a fun, no stress, inventive romp. I didn't expect to have as much fun with it as I did, and I've watched it three times since release now.
The sequel does a good job of not repeating the formula while keeping things interesting. It barely qualifies as horror, but just about lives up to the standard set by the first film. I was really bummed when it flopped at the box office. I think in time, it will find its audience and reveal itself as a misunderstood cult classic of sorts.
I keep expecting Jessica Roth to blow up any day now. She was so hilarious and charming and full of life in both films. That she's not a big name yet is a some sort of crime.

'No stress fun' is a good way to describe it. Although I can't agree that the sequel avoids repeating the same beats. At first at makes you think it's gonna shift perspectives to a side character, which would have actually been interesting and inventive, but then it just does a lot of the same stuff but adds all sorts of scifi nonsense and low rate comedy. It's not bad but didnt live up to the modest standards of the first.

Fun movie, but I thought the sequel was more interesting.

Finally saw Happy Death Day, and it turned out to be pretty good. A nice spin on the slasher formula that benefits from a very appealing lead actress; Jessica Rothe was superb. I did find the tongue-in-cheek aspect amusing, although it does get a bit too goofy at times. I would have like it to be more R-rated and less PG13-rated; it is a shasher movie, after all. Nevertheless, it does have some good scary thrills, and that mask was creepy as hell.

I liked how the story, despite being comedy horror, took the drama scenes seriously - the scene with the dad was actually one of my favorite moments. But yeah, it wasn't scary at all, even when it was obviously trying to be. Happy Death Day 2 U I could have done without. Watching it I got the impression that they were really hard trying to make it more "smart" and unpredictable than the first one, but as a result it came across as try-hard and quite obnoxious. I didn't hate it, but I don't want to see it again either. Not looking forward to part 3, assuming that they are still making it.

I don’t know if I just have low expectations for these movies or something, but I just saw the sequel and liked it nearly as much as the original. Yes, switching out horror for science-fiction doesn’t really work, and yes, it really isn’t horror at all (but then neither was the original)—but I found it utterly funny, charming, clever, intermittently witty, and even moving in the scenes with Mom. I have no idea how it bombed at the box office. Again, I absolutely loved Jessica Rothe throughout. Why isn’t she a big star again?—she’s beautiful, charismatic, hilarious, with a magnificent skill for timing. The suicide sequence was brilliant. The twists on the original were so clever. And, gah, the movie tricked me fair and square on the murderer reveal (again!): I guessed the person’s identity but completely missed the clues because I was so busy laughing. Rachel Matthews as Queen Bee Danielle got to show off comic chops she didn’t get to show in the first movie, and did a good job of it. The scenes I mentioned above were acted, written, and directed just as well as those with Dad in the first. I guess my only real criticisms were that not a single minute of it was scary and the killer’s accomplice came out of nowhere, but those are minor things. I’m surprised to say this, but both of these movies were just great. I can’t wait for the inevitable third.
