I've always had a difficult time parsing the real theological differences between Sunnis and Shias. Every time I research it, it boils down to political inheritance of power after Muhammad. Can someone explain to me the real philosophical differences? I mean between Catholic and Orthodox and Protestant there are prime differences in theology. It's not just Pope versus no Pope.
I also know that the Wahhabi in Saudi Arabia are Sunni but they are the equivalent of our extremely fundamentalist Protestants in Christianity. I'm sure there are Sunnis who are more progressive than some Shias. Again, it seems theology has nothing to do with the difference between Sunni and Shia.
Since the difference between Shia and Sunni seems political and not religious, why would not Sufism be a good alternative on your poll?
I know the "Kurdish" issue has been covered. They are an ethnicity. You could have just as well put "Malays" or "Bengalis" on your list since they are predominately Muslim ethnicities like the Kurds. I don't get it.
Black Muslims could also have been an option. The Nation of Islam is certainly a distinct Muslim denomination and well known to Westerners who frequent this site.
