define gambling. i dont frequent casinos or play cards/machines/roullette but I do enjoy betting on performance or knowledge I can influance myself. So not like on which team is going to win which match but “I am right about this/that” or “i can do this/that”. but my big “gambling” addiction is predicting the oscars. i spend weeks preparing my chart, I do calculations to support my guesses, i read endless amount of articles about it, i see all the movies throughout the entire year and do consider the oscar predicting one of the few fields i am an “expert” in ) . I may or may not have PSTD from Moonlight ruining my otherwise perfect scor that year. But those 30 seconds of feeling like I won (over everyone I bet with plus in my heart) was marvelous. Unfortunatelly I was also commenting on it publicly live and may have fell victim to some first grade hubris, thinking I am the best in the entire universe since I predicted all categories correctly over everyone else. Yep the fall was deep. Last year I made a couple of rookie mistakes. Lets hope this year I will do better. Its always emotions that ef it up for me. the math doesnt lie. Interesting post, Nora. I have done so much gambling and spent so much of time on it but I never bothered to check its formal definition. I just found that wiki says "Gambling is the wagering of money or something of value on an event with an uncertain outcome, with the primary intent of winning money or material goods." So gambling is simply putting your money on an uncertain outcome in hopes of guessing the outcome correctly and thereby winning money .There are bets like which colour of shoes the next bench player will enter the game with. It seems your gambling addiction has more fun element than stress element (predicting the Oscars). Best of luck to you for this year but remember not to keep your expectations too high. so yeah per this definition i also gamble.l even thiugh tje money is secondary. oh and its very stresful, because I have to publish my predictions for work so everybody can view and later comment on my genious or stupidity dependig on my accuracy rate. But its at a level where I still enjoy it. Plus my overall accuracy rate stays well over 80% so I feel good about the outcome usualy one way or another. But putting the final chart tohether is a stress fest. I used to do nominations predictions as well but its so time consuming to do it well.

LOL. Why? For thinking the casino had a conspiracy to make me win?

I'm assuming you mean you "bet" on what you think will win based on all you've read, other awards etc, not the films you personally think were the best in each field. Do you bet money? Do you bet on all catergories or just the big 4, 6, 8?

I very rarely gamble. I did it a few times when I've gone to a casino. Set aside a modest amount, responsibly played and enjoyed a decent run a Blackjack. I didn't make any money but I didn't lose much and enjoyed myself for close to an hour.
The last time I went however, the lowest limit table was twice as high, I still played but just got unlucky (or the dealer/house got lucky), I wasn't playing any differently from the last few times and I play reasonably conservatively. I lost 8 out of 9 hands straight (the entirity of my small limit). It'll probably be a while before I do it again.

BUT sometimes my desire for something to win influences the actual prediction i end up making, even though the math points in another direction. the math is almost never wrong, but each year i fall victim to the emotions on at least one category. last year it was the best picture. i really wanted 3 billboards to win, and my emotions made me believe it was more likely than it was. so even though most markers pointed in another direction i was too weak to follow the science. but yeah, i predict what will win, and in my side notes i say what i would hope that would win too. this year I already know Hereditary is my weak spot. i predict all categories but dont place bets outside of 20 of them. its usually the shorts i stay away from since i never see them.

Wow! Not bad, I'd be pretty happy if I predicted 19/20. Personally I don't even watch them any more and am pretty slective with the new films I watch. I'm lucky if I've seen more than a couple of the frontrunners come Awards night.

I don't gamble because I don't like losing money. The only time I ever did was in Las Vegas when I bought $4 worth of nickels and played the nickel slots just for the experience. It bought me a couple of hours of entertainment. Although it's tempting, I've never bought a lottery ticket. Dark chocolates, alcohol and now gambling - You are able to absolute control on almost everything. Hats off sir! Though it seems you never liked alcohol and gambling to begin with in the first place. True, I never really liked those things much, so it wasn't difficult to reject them. But I wasn't always this way. Over the years I slowly exercised better control over my life.

I do a little bit of gambling from time to time but never very much because I have an impulsive streak and I'd prefer not to be homeless. Having said that I think I could make a living playing poker. It's a bit of a dream of mine. I'm just trying to figure out how much throwaway money I'd need to play enough live games to get my feet wet and learn the ropes to where I can eventually swim rather than sink. 50K playing the right type of games should be more than adequate I think?

I am disinterested in gambling. Never really done it much and don't really plan to again.
Waste of money and time.

I've indulged exactly twice in my life and promised myself I would never do it again. I'd rather flush my money down the toilet.

What do i think about gambling?
Well I think
you got to know when to hold them know when to fold them know when to walk away know when to run you never count your money when you're sittin' at the table, there's time enough for counting, when the dealings done.
