That was about ten months ago. I thought I'd look the old boy up. Sadly he passed away in November, a few months short of his 100th birthday.

Formed in Bologna, Italy, the band with 20 original members including Jocelyn Brown, Luther Vandross, Krystal Davis etc blew the disco lights out with the first album - well, in Europe and New Zealand at least. 'Searchin'' didn't even enter the US HOT 100 for god's sake. But this did - it got to US #40, and #4 in the US R&B hit parade. A change of personnel reappeared a few years later with 'Change of Heart' but the synthesized electronic sound of it was a far cry from the sensational sound you hear below, with the original hot mamas shakin' their sassy sirloins and classy dudes bakin' the 'taters in one long wood-fired groove...

The Soul Train has arrived at Platform Funk, just a-steamin' and a-creamin' with the delicious sound of Narada Michael Walden. The crisp cut of the See America horns, the rippling bass of T.M Stevens (he of the bubbling bass on Stacy Lattisaw's Jump To The Beat, written/produced by Walden) the finger-lickin' riffs of Corrado Rustici's geetar and Narada combining vox and percussion as the groove coasts along at 90mph on a Saturday Nite.
He should have loved her, he laments. He can't believe he let her down so badly. It all gets too much for him halfway through the second verse and he can't contain his frustration any longer as his voice soars to a desperate falsetto "APPREHENDING ALL MY CRIMINAL NEE-E-E-DS! That stole your heart, then left you to bleed..." It's one of those moments in a song where you're aware of a special part approaching - the lonesome wail at the end of Bruce Springsteen's 'I'm On Fire', the drum crash on 'In The Air Tonight', the 'adrenaline shot' on 'Gimme All Your Lovin'' - it's coming, it's coming, here it comes...
Let's jump aboard before we're left standin' on the platform and the train done gone.
