My great niece goes to a public school. She is 8 years old.
The parents are given the option for their children to either go to a religious Christian 'scripture' class, or an 'ethics' class, one period per week.
My niece chose the 'ethics' class for her child.
At the last scripture lesson for this year ( in Australia the school yea rends in December and starts at the beginning of February )
ALL the children in the scripture class got a large personalised wrapped Christmas gift and ALL the children in the 'ethics' class got none.
Something for them to discuss in the first 'ethics' class of next year?

Actually, I thought parents weren't supposed to choose stuff like this for their kids.

It used to be that Christians were 'bought' with a promise of eternal life and 'salvation. It endures with Christians bribing kids to come to scripture classes to be indoctrinated. I guess the main issue is why SOME children in one class, get a gift and not others when they are only eight years old.

A Government school gave the parents a choice of Christian scripture education or ethics for the kids of those of other religions or denominations or none. If it is a child's birthday and they take a cake to school for the class, can you imagine ONLY giving cake to the girls, or only the boys, or only the kids with blonde hair or some other arbitrary difference?

I thought kids were supposed to have the right to choose. Otherwise it's indoctrination. now that poor kid is going to be a giftless, philosophy major.

You mean the teacher? It is VERY unusual for teachers to give children Christmas presents here, especially if the class is optional like this one...it is usually the reverse and TOTALLY a private matter.

I would argue that this gift giving was a private matter to that class and it had nothing to do with the Scrooges in the ethics class.

Parents are responsible for their children's welfare and education until they are older and able to choose. This WAS indoctrination now that you mention it, and bribery. Well, at least she won't be a knuckle dragging fundamentalist Christian!

What with your relations to QE II and all, it shouldn't be all that difficult.

I think a recommendation to 'get off the turps' might be a good place to start!
