Interesting (well......I thought so) chart of all U.S. music sales by format, from 1973 to 2017 (the top chart): www.riaa.com/u-s-sales-database/Look at how MASSIVE CD sales (the large ORANGE bars) were from the 1990's to the mid-2000's (basically tripling the combined total of ALL vinyl/tape sales in the 1970's). And though the last couple of years have seen an increase in Total overall sales (compared to the previous few years), also interesting to note how far overall sales of all formats have fallen from the all-time height of music sales (1999) in this country (hmmm.....think the internet may have had just a BIT to do with this ??). And the vinyl album, even with its resurgence in the last decade, is still a (relative) drop in the bucket (less than 5%) compared to the total of $8.7 Billion in total sales in 2017. Note: The graph is (somewhat) 'interactive'. You can click on specific items to see them in an isolated view (either on the graph itself, or on any of the individual "formats" listed in the color chart key to the right of the graph). For instance, if you click on the LP/EP format (the DARK BLUE bars), you see that as unpopular as they eventually became (the years of 1992-94, and 2005-06, accounted for the lowest percentage of LP sales compared to the overall total) before slowly starting their resurgence, they never did fully disappear from the music sales scene (unlike 8-Tracks, which fell completely off the 'radar' after 1982).
