OH, they were real living people, and somebody thought it was a good idea to photograph them like that... Fingers crossed, everyone involved is long dead, and we can sleep peacefully in our beds tonight. |

My first guess would have been infectious disease specialist, but since AJ already tried and lost, I'm going to go with coroner or medical examiner; someone who does autopsies. |

I believe that might be an early style X Ray machine behind him, so I'm guessing it's protective gear for the technician who operated it.
There's a wonderful scene is season 1 of the Knick where they get their first X Ray machine. They have no idea it's dangerous, so everyone clusters around the machine waiting their turn to have their X Ray taken. You stand in front of it to get an exposure... for 20 minutes.

I haven't had my morning caffeine yet; I should have recognized that, my veterinarian still uses gear kind of like that, minus the head gear and the long sleeves.

Jesus Christ no, my ancestors were not that pretty... In 1887, my great grandfather was acknowledged as the strongest man in South West England... he was the only person who could single handedly lift a two man bale of hay above his head, and toss it on to a cart... That took muscle, not good looks like in that photo. |
