Seems to me that the sponsors had more control over TV programming than the producers!
Often, the sponsor's name was included in the title of the shows, such as ROBERT MONTGOMERY PRESENTS YOUR LUCKY STRIKE THEATER, THE G.E. THEATER, and BOB HOPE PRESENTS THE CHRYSLER THEATER (which I think was the last one.
And even if the sponsors' names weren't in the title, their presence was seen in other ways.
For example, the closing credits of MY THREE SONS, sponsored by General Motors, depicted pictures of the product in several frames.
And HAZEL, sponsored by Ford, placed their product in the opening credits and throughout the series.
Product placement was quite evident such as in THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES (sponsored by Kellogg's) and THE DANNY THOMAS SHOW (sponsored by Post and Maxwell House).
Apparently, the time eventually came when networks and producers didn't need powerful sponsors to sell their programs.
I wonder when this miracle happened.
Was it with the rise of cable TV?
Or was it the growth of syndication?
