"Oliver and Company" seems like the movie time forgot. I'm sort of neutral on Disney, but that was some of the last great hand-drawn animation they did. And the songs are awesome. Billie Joel was also in his prime at the time (I think he still sounds great, but he was on fire in this).
"The Blob" yes! This was an unbelievably good and out of left field horror remake.
"Beetlejuice" A pretty bizarre movie at its foundation, but exceptionally well executed. One of my all-time favorites. I can't think of a single movie like it.
Edit: Forgot about "Coming To America." One of the first times I can remember laughing so hard it hurt.

I saw those movies in theaters when i was 6/7 that year even Oliver and Company 3 times in my city theaters even after New Year's day! i had some O&C merchandise as a kid even the CD soundtrack which i got for christmas and i remembered being pissed off it never came to video the next year and had to wait 8 years.

Since I saw it 4 times that summer, I have to say Who Framed Roger Rabbit. It was also the last Hollywood movie I greatly anticipated seeing that almost entirely lived up to expectations. After that, I can't recall any film that I felt was a complete success. The disappointment factor grew more and more. In some ways WFRR exceeded expectations since I assumed they would use modern Bugs Bunny and co. designs for their appearances so it was very cool they used retro designs instead. The scene where Bob Hoskins walks into the club and Daffy Duck and Donald Duck were on the pianos was sublime.
The animated FX were done pre-CGI so they held up well until the Mask and other things came along--then a great deal of the animation began to look flat. These days, a kid can do a Roger Rabbit style cartoon figure with proper 3d shadows and shading on a home computer. In 1986 it took 2 years to do the animation for the film with hundreds of animators.

1. Die Hard - without question, the best movie of 1988
The rest in no particular order:
Who Framed Roger Rabbit - clever, inventive comedy with some very good performances
Beetlejuice - I didn't really care for the Beetlejuice character but the rest of the cast are outstanding
Heathers - brilliant dark comedy
Big - much better than I expected, surprised Hanks was nominated only because the role doesn't seem the type recognized
Scrooged - has its moments and good enough for a mention but not as great as it should be
Naked Gun - absolutely hilarious, one of the best comedies ever made
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels - has some inspired comedic moments but overall is not as good as the talent involved would suggest
A Fish Called Wanda - another one of the great comedies, Kevin Kline won a well deserved Oscar
Rain Man - have only seen it once and I liked it but I have no desire to see it again
Funny Farm - to me, this is one of the most underrated comedies I have seen, so well written and a collection of colorful characters
Bull Durham - used to love it but I watched it recently and not quite as good as I remembered
Mississippi Burning - what is fiction and what is fact? best not to seek answers and enjoy this powerful tale with searing performances
Working Girl - an underrated gem, I watched this a few years ago and it just blew me away, a terrific film
Married to the Mob - another underrated gem, some brilliant comedic acting by Merdeces Ruehl and Dean Stockwell
Eight Men Out - one of the best baseball movies I have seen
