Yes, this video destroyed Squire's career overnight. He tried to blame the director, but it was all on him for thinking he could be a feminine Tom Cruise in Risky Business:

That was the first one I thought of when I read the thread title.

This video also destroyed a career, but the wrong person got destroyed. Life is very unfair....

Locker room talk. Can you imagine convos between him and Bill Clinton?

He even alienated his gay fanbase.

There was a great book about MTV a few years ago and an entire chapter was devoted to that Billy Squier video. The book said that the director of the video was a flaming homosexual and he got exactly what he wanted in that video.

Is it not scary that with songs that bad, he needed the video to wreck his career?

Say what you want about the guy, but he blew Poison off the stage when he opened up for them.
In the end, it's all about the music.
Bob Dylan survived going electric.
Metallica survived cutting their hair.
AC/DC and Van Halen both released some great music after replacing their lead singers.
Rush's drummer experienced a catastrophic personal loss.

Hmm, some nice examples of survivors. But let's look at all that couldn't survive. 1. Billy Squire could not survive prancing around in a pink Flashdance shirt. 2. The Beatles couldn't survive Yoko. 3. Hendrix, Morrison, Kurt, Amy couldn't survive a simple powder called heroin. 4. Hair bands couldn't survive grunge. 5. Grunge bands couldn't survive Beyoncé. 6. Zeppelin couldn't survive the loss of Bonham. 7. Milli Vanilli couldn't survive without backing tracks. I could go on. The point is, it isn't all about the music in the end. There are other factors that can end careers.

Lol. I can't believe Squier had the nerve to blame the director of the video. Not even the world's greatest director could direct the world's greatest actor to make moves like that. Nope, that was all Billy Boy, and I have a hunch he selected the wardrobe as well. I remember when MTV premiered this video, and my wife and I were in shock afterwards.
