In all seriousness though, in recent years, I'd probably go with Daniel Day-Lewis as Lincoln. I know it's cliched now to applaud him but he really seemed like the old man.
maybe off the gist of the thread, but the makeup in Lincoln was remarkable. Compare Bruce McGill
to the real Edwin M. Stanton
Same thing with David Strathairn and William Seward, Tommy Lee Jones and Thaddeus Stevens. Hell of a job.

I’d heard people describe certain performances by actors as them having ‘disappeared into the role’, but it wasn’t until watching Heath Ledger’s performance as The Joker in The Dark Knight (2008) that I actually ever saw this happen (as usually, no matter how great an actor is in a role, I still on some level ‘see’ the actor). There was no trace of Heath Ledger there, just this being who, no matter how ‘larger than life’ he might’ve been, still felt grounded and ‘real’ in the film. When he yelled “Look at me!” he sounded truly scary/otherworldly. He definitely deserved his posthumous Oscar win, I thought.
