I started Judo training when I was 8 years old and eventually made the blue belt, but I stopped when I was 14, because I was sent to a boarding school and had no opportunity practising the sport there. I never had to put my "knowledge" to practice and I'm not sure it would help me, if I had to fight someone in real life. It was good for me, because it made my body more flexible and taught me how to fall properly, but it would be of little use in a bar room brawl.
I've always been fascinated by Kendo, but sadly never had the opportunity to try it out.
I had similar experiences.
There were several occasions were it was of no use to me whatsoever, but on one occasion it was exactly the right skillset for exactly the right situation. I suppose I just got lucky.
Of course, the lessons I learned also came in handy when wrestling or mucking about with mates. One or two of those Judo holds can be quite effective...
My Wifey does and she did mixed martial arts and wrestling training when she was younger and I know a bit of martial arts and self defence myself and I flipped a guy on his butt one time in P.E. who wouldn't leave me alone 'cause I wouldn't be his girlfriend but I am not a fighter like my Wife or anywhere near as strong as her.
If so, what kind? And were you self taught or did you have a teacher?
I've wanted to learn martial arts for a long time but I have never found the time to. I especially want to even more now after seeing this video:
Dayum.
Yes. I never took a martial arts class. But I wrestled in high school. I used to watch the MMA competitions. And I trained with people who took martial arts classes.

I know karate and jujitsu, but i have autism and wasn't really interested in actually learning. I mostly messed about, but im more interested in watching Kung Fu than taking part.

Why not? It would be a good ability for life, if you ever need to defend yourself one day.
It’s just that there’s a rare chance anything violent would happen to me for me to fight back. It’s also a waste of time when you have other things going on.

Everybody says that until something happens where self-defense is necessary. Then it is too late.

Well yeah it's rare. But if it does happen, then what do you do? It's like air travel. It's rare to crash until it's not and then you're dead. Things are only rare until they happen to you. It's a bit of a dangerous mindset I think.

I partly agree. It's not that it's a waste of time though, it's the fact that there is no time. So to spend your very limited time on that would feel like it's a waste. Time moves by ridiculously fast these days that you really can't fit much at all in a day any more.

Like someone about to murder you? I think if they had a gun you’re screwed either way.
I've dabbled in several different styles - TKD, Aikido, BJJ, and Kempo - but don't think I can handle that stuff anymore. Too beat up. I still like to hit my heavy bag once in a while though.

1. Good point. But if you can become aware of these things maybe it won’t happen. They’ll still be rare occurrences.
2. Yeah, that’s what I was going for. No time in the gosh darn world, is there?
