An interesting book on the subject:

The Naked Kiss (1964) Kelly leaves Grantville having found discrimination bigotry, hypocrisy and moral decay lurking behind the seemingly wholesome façade of the small New England community... With a strong emphasis on women in community, a lament on the moral degradation of community, a master work brilliantly conceived, pulp fiction extraordinaire from Samuel Fuller .

The Barnet Touch "landlords must do subsidiary work" Polustanok (1963) Boris Barnet
A lonely aging city engineer and amateur artist Pavel on his doctors orders decides to holiday he travels to a rural coastal community, interestingly it is a kolkhozy a Soviet era cooperative run collective-farm, Pavel is warmly greeted at the farm, and two charming children befriend him, once everyone finds out he can fix things, Pavel can hardly get a moment to himself. The young girl Nyuska exclaims and constantly reminds him, "landlords must do subsidiary work" after he cleans up and moves into an old shack .. A simple and beautifully crafted heart warming film. Highlighted with two outstanding ! child actors, fantastic support for the wonderful lead role from Vasiliy Merkurev (Pavel), and wonderful on location shooting at the community on the shores of the Caspian Sea. A touching and positive final message about life and community brings a tear to my eye Boris Barnet's final film is absolutely pure cinematic joy, crafted with original style direct from his humanitarian heart. A much loved treasured gem !!!

Your contributions are so often foreign to me, but inspirational just to hear about! It broadens my horizon even if I never get to see the films, and I'm very grateful for that.

Oh, you got that right, kijii. Thanks. And I'll add another documentary that illustrates the power and necessity of community: Merion C. Cooper's

I come in late here.
Logan's Run 1976, as a future community. A variation could be said was seen in Æon Flux 2005.
The World, the Flesh and the Devil 1959 is the start of a new community.
Black Narcissus 1947, could be seen as close knit community way up in the mountains.
Whisky Galore aka Tight Little Island 1949 and it's island population (remade in 2016), and it's lesser known seguel Rockets Galore 1958.

This is one of my favorites, bravo. Written by William Saroyan about Fresno, the small California town he grew up in, so it has powerful and touching elements of that life portrayed in his uniquely personal voice and vision. I love the novel, btw. Worth a read, if you're interested. Thanks. Haven't seen the film in a while but I think I recall a poignant scene with Rooney delivering a telegram notifying a family that a son has been killed in the war. And Saroyan was a cousin of David Seville, founder of the Chipmunks.

Love, love, love Steinbeck, kijii. And this is a good choice for the theme of the thread. In fact, I think I'll now have to add East of Eden (1955) to the list. The community in it is less pronounced, but it's still an important element. Actually, I think that was one of Steinbeck's great themes, a product of growing up in the (then) small town of Salinas, California as he did. I was thinking the same thing about Steinbeck. Some of his best novels, novellas, and stories are set in small communities. Here is one that comes to mind about the people of small town loving Doc and wanting to help him..even when they didn't understand exactly what what he did for a living. So much humor in their attempt to help him. Cannery Row (1982) / David S. Ward

@forceghostackbar …. do not recall any chicken (in or out of the oven) The 'Burbs is the one where "An overstressed suburbanite and his fellow neighbors are convinced that the new family on the block are part of a murderous Satanic cult." It's a hoot that might appeal to your "notoriously warped sense of humor" Btw … happy new year !

OUR TOWN (1940)"Change comes slowly to a small New Hampshire town in the early 20th century. People grow up, get married, live, and die. Milk and the newspaper get delivered every morning, and nobody locks their front doors." Nitpickery from the IMDb page for those so inclined : The beginning of the movie takes place on June 7, 1901. That night everyone comments on how beautiful the moon is and we later learn it is 8:30pm. The moon did not rise until midnight on that date. In fact the sun did not set until 8:30pm. Additionally, crickets can be heard loudly chirping throughout these scenes. This would be very unusual for early June, but common in late August.
