I don't hear many people talk about Upgrade, but that was a surprisingly good movie.

I don't hear many people talk about Upgrade, but that was a surprisingly good movie. See, I didn't even know of this film. It stars Logan Marshall-Green, who was in a great show that was cancelled after one season. (Quarry)

Mandy! my favorite movie of the year.
It's like Heavy Metal (the movie) meets Resident Evil 4 (the game) and is an instant cult classic.

Mandy! my favorite movie of the year. It's like Heavy Metal (the movie) meets Resident Evil 4 (the game) and is an instant cult classic. Many people have a dislike for Nicolas Cage, but I love him. He's released some stinkers; direct -to-crap films lately, but I wanna see this film.

Thoroughbreds is one of the best of last year in my opinion. Great choice. I'm a fan of Olivia Cooke and Paul Sparks. (Bates Motel and Boardwalk Empire. House of Cards)

I really haven't seen enough as of yet to make any completely under the radar suggestions, but I did really enjoy American Animals which doesn't seem to get much attention.
I'd also recommend the offbeat and intriguing French film See You Up There.

Just so everybody's on the same page, I always recommend using the movie database as the final word on year-of-release. Based on, I guess, a first festival showing, "Thoroughbreds" is cataloged as a 2017 film. It is, indeed, a fine movie and is on my Best of the previous year's list.
Colette / Wash Westmoreland. This was a better movie than I thought it would be, thanks to Keira Knightly's expert performance.
RBG / Julie Cohen and Betsy West. This effective and inspiring biographical documentary on the life of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will thrill you, chill you, and fulfill you.
Two movies came out in 2018 that play around brilliantly with the documentary format.
American Animals / Bart Layton tells the compelling true crime story with actors but interrupt the story with interviews and commentary material by the actual people being portrayed. The “fiction” part, the acted out part, is the major emphasis of this movie.
On the other hand, Three Identical Strangers / Tim Wardle is very much a documentary format with discreet, almost abstract actor recreations of certain scenes. Both films are very creative uses of the documentary structure in different ways, but both are absolutely riveting and may very well be on my Best Of the Decade list come the end of 2019.

'We The Animals'
Was my hidden gem for 2018. Really thoughtful, well directed movie.

I would probably say 'Becks' and 'Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay.' The latter was of the best animated/comic book movies of the year and a lot better than the live action 'Suicide Squad' movie.

Upgrade Puzzle Bad Times at the El Royale You Were Never Really Here (just checked the date and it's from 2017 but I'm going to leave it on my list.)
