Well I liked The Rock so kudos. Armageddon is certainly a surprise.

True... Neither film made the upgrade to a Criterion blu ray release though. I believe both had laserdisc and DVD releases. This article reads as a defense for releasing Armageddon (written in 1999): Criterion ArmageddonThis is a good hypothesis for why Criterion released Armageddon in its collection: No apology for Armageddon

After Armageddon and Pearl Harbor, I thought Bay could have grown into a more respected director. Alas he was saddled with that dumb Transformers garbage and doomed himself from ever being taken seriously again.

The man could probably do some amazing napalm footage (or maybe do the whole movie about B-52 bombing sorties). Imagine Bay doing this (from Operation Arc Light). He was born for it. ![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/94/Bombs_from_B-52_Arc_Light_strike_exploding.jpg/1280px-Bombs_from_B-52_Arc_Light_strike_exploding.jpg)

Of his recent films, Pain & Gain was probably his best. It does take talent to fuck up a simple concept like Transformers but Bay finds a way. It's not surprising to hear the first Transformers movie not directed by him is getting much better reviews.

The Rock is one of my favourite Nicholas Cage movies. It's actually a very decent action flick.

"It's a cholinesterase inhibitor. Stops the brain from sending nerve messages down the spinal cord within thirty seconds. Any epidermal exposure or inhalation and you'll know. A twinge at the small of your back as the poison seizes your nervous system... DO NOT MOVE THAT! Your muscles freeze, you can't breathe, you spasm so hard you break your own back and spit your guts out. But that's after your skin melts off."

Cool, I guess. But would the hipsters who buy criterion care about those great films?
