It's not the type of movie that I would normally watch, but the trailer looked a bit interesting and it is playing in a theatre near my work that has a 5 PM showing with matinee prices, so I am thinking of catching that.
The presence in the cast of Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica from "True Blood", Karen Page from "Daredevil") doesn't hurt either.

I really really liked it.
Novel? not really. Well made? hell yeah.
Logan Miller is so talented. Overall i think it was the acting that was so good that it elevated this.
good film. enjoyed it a lot. go see it if u like these movies.

So is it basically just a scare-type movie, or is there a more cerebral aspect? And is it actually scary?

I was going to watch it but not in a theatre, but now that you've mentioned the woman from Daredevil is in it, I might not watch it at all.

It's fine for the month of January. I'm not in love with the performances and of course, the idea has been done with Cube, Saw, The Running Man, etc.
But, the direction is really good, and pretty innovative at times. The ending though, ugh.

I saw it a while ago. It's basically a remake of Cube.

Saw an early Thursday matinee (ok, 4PM), I was pleasantly surprised with the first two thirds of the month, aside from one annoying character. But the ending- without spoiling anything- has a "what the fuck" element that was distracting. It's not the worst dumped in January release ever. But calling it a horror movie on the same level of "Saw" is a mistake. It has suspense, but it ain't scary.
7/10

I saw it a while ago. It's basically a remake of Cube. you are probably thinking about a different Escape Room film, no? This one just came out and was only shot last year. But there is an older one from 2017. which was more like the Cube, more gory and more violent than this one. This one is a bit different in that aspect.

Pretty much the know-it-all Danny . Then when Zoey somehow survives the "hospital" room with the poison gas and arrives just in time to save Ben from the mastermind of the game.

I think Miller is the strongest actor too out of those who appear here, he feels to me like the next Dane DeHann, able to excel in eccentric characters. There seemed to be no nuance at all with most of the actors (Woll was solid though too). Part of that was probably the dialogue, but those playing like Danny, Jason, Mike, and even Zoey felt stilted and forced with some of their reactions and delivery of lines imo.

yeah that is pretty crazy. whats even crazier was there was a shot in the movie of a newspaper with the headline 5 people die in escape room fire! in the waiting room, one of the people throws it down onto the table.
thought the movie was pretty good. it managed to keep you on your toes the whole movie.
