HELP!!!!!1 There are two versions ofSuperman II. The theatrical and The Donner Cut. Which one do I watch? I prefer the Donner Cut. It's close to how Richard Donner originally envisioned the film to be and it cuts out of the comedic filler that Richard Lester shot. That said, there are shots and dialogue I preferred in the theatrical cut than that in the Donner Cut.

What! Well, I'm convinced! I will rent both this Wednesday and in an homage to my buddy, Nalkarj I will post a live blog of my experience with an "Ackbar watches Superman" thread! Stay tuned... I hope you enjoy ’em, my friend! I far prefer the first to the second—in fact, I think the first one is still the best superhero film ever made. (Admittedly, I’ve only seen the Donner cut of the latter, though, knowing Richard Lester’s sense of humor, I can’t imagine that I’d prefer his version.) I must stress that for all I love the first one, it’s far from a perfect movie—it’s rather schizophrenic, to be honest. But Chris Reeve simply is Superman, at least for me, and he and Margot Kidder have some of the most amazing and instant chemistry I’ve seen in the movies. It is fun and funny, yet Richard Donner and his writers truly seem to believe this is the second greatest story ever told. The best. Enjoy!

yet Richard Donner and his writers truly seem to believe this is the second greatest story ever told. Based on interviews & documentaries I've seen... Originally, the first scripts that the producers had were very campy, much like the the original Batman TV series... But, I got the impression that Director Richard Donner truly loved the character, and when he signed on to the project, he took this opportunity in making this film, very seriously... With the help of Tom Mankiewicz, they rewrote the script so the film would depict Superman as a real living being who came to our world, and not just some character depicted in a children's comic book... I think that, above all else, is why the film still holds up so well, even to this day... Almost every modern superhero film being made today, takes some of is cues and tone, from the first Superman film. Part of the reason why the following films went downhill, is because more and more comedy kept being added to the films... Richard Donner got it right the first time... It's truly sad, that he wasn't able to finish Superman II, and to be able to direct additional sequels. The same fate happened with Tim Burton's Batman Films... The more campy they got, the less they did well at the box office...
