Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film.
FIRST TIME MOVIE VIEWING
Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse (2018, Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey) Cinema Wondeful blend of animation styles, great nods to comic book styles, good soundtrack and easily the best spiderman film yet. Makes my top 10 of the year. 7.5/10
Updated 2018 top 10
1. Thoroughbreds 7.5-8 2. The Other Side of the Wind 7.5 3. First Reformed 7.5 4. Mission: Impossible - Fallout 7.5 5. Leave no Trace 7.5 6. Deadpool 2 7.5 7. Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse 8. Incredibles 2 7.5 9. American Animals 7 10. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs 7
Captain Fantastic (2016, Matt Ross) Netflix Set in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, a father devoted to raising his six kids with a rigorous physical and intellectual education is forced to leave his paradise and enter the world, challenging his idea of what it means to be a parent. It is well acted but just kind of finishes when it feels like there is more to be told. 6/10
The Boy (2016, William Brent Bell) Netflix A doll horror set in England, it is pretty bad, I called the twist about 25 minutes in. 4/10
REPEAT MOVIE VIEWING
Orphan (2009, Jaume Collet-Serra) blu ray Simple little horror, a bit tedious in the middle but a strong finish. 6/10
FIRST TIME TV VIEWING
Watership Down (2018, Limited Series) Netflix Four episode retelling of the famous novel done with cgi animation. Enjoyed this, not for kids though. Recommended
REPEAT TV VIEWING
True Detective (2014, Season One) blu ray One of the greatest seasons of television ever. Look forward to the new season later this month, apparently a return to form. Highly Recommended

Captain Fantastic - I thought it was quite good. Really good performance from Viggo. 7.5/10 Orphan - Aside from the great twist, I found the last act to be the weakest part, but the movie is still good overall. 7/10 True Detective season 1 - brilliant First Time Viewings:
The Old Man & the Gun (2018, David Lowery) This one is based on a true story and I found it to be pretty good. It's well cast and fairly entertaining throughout. 7/10
Mid90s (2018, Jonah Hill) This one has been getting really good reviews and I thought it was pretty good overall, with some very good moments here and there. 7/10
Bad Times at the El Royale (2018, Drew Goddard) Based on the trailers and plot synopsis I was getting a Hateful Eight vibe from this one and it turns out the film definitely has some similarities. I don't think it's anywhere near as good as Tarantino's film, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. It's well cast, well paced, and I enjoyed the twists and turns in the story.Good music too. 7.5/10
Blindspotting (2018, Carlos López Estrada) This one has some pretty powerful moments and good acting from the two main guys. 7/10
Bird Box (2018, Susanne Bier) Some nice tension in this one and it has a cool concept that was pretty well executed. I definitely think it could have been better, but it was pretty good and Sandra Bullock puts in some strong work. 7/10
Wildlife (2018, Paul Dano) This family based drama is really well done and has some scenes that will definitely stay with me. Good performances from the main trio too, especially Carey Mulligan, who I think deserves some awards nominations. 8/10
Leave No Trace (2018, Debra Granik) The two leads are good and the film itself is pretty good too. 7/10
Dogville (2003, Lars Von Trier) A strange, but interesting film. It's nearly three hours, but I found it engaging and the cast did a good job. 7.5/10
Antichrist (2009, Lars Von Trier) I already knew about the more graphic parts of this film and while they were certainly disturbing, it felt like it was just shock for the sake of shock. The leads are good, but the film didn't do much for me overall and felt like a wasted opportunity. 5/10
Melancholia (2011, Lars Von Trier) I liked part one a bit more than part two, but both were good and on the whole I liked this one quite a bit. It's well acted and I liked the symbolism. 7.5/10
The Favourite (2018, Yorgos Lanthimos) I ended up enjoying this one more than I thought I would. It's very well made, has three wonderful performances, and is very entertaining. I was looking forward to it, but I didn't expect to love it. 8.5/10
Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 (2013, Lars Von Trier) Could have been better if you ask me, but still pretty good. 7/10
Nymphomaniac Vol. 2 (2013, Lars Von Trier) I may have liked this one a tad more than the first. 7/10
Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018, Phil Johnston & Rich Moore) A disappointing sequel. Just not as fun or engaging as the original, but it has definitely has its moments. 6/10
The House That Jack Built (2018, Lars Von Trier) I thought this one was really well done. It kept me engaged throughout and had some truly fantastic sequences. Matt Dillon is damn good int he lead role too, which certainly helped. 8/10
Repeat Viewings:
North by Northwest (1959, Alfred Hitchcock) My favorite Hitchcock. So much fun and with a brilliant script, great score, and a strong cast. 9.5/10
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975, Terry Gilliam & Terry Jones) Some classic moments in this one make it a pretty fun time. 7/10
Movie Awards:
BEST FILM - North by Northwest BEST ACTOR - Matt Dillon (The House That Jack Built) BEST ACTRESS - Carey Mulligan (Wildlife) BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - James Mason (North by Northwest) BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY - Robbie Ryan (The Favourite) BEST SCORE - Bernard Herrmann (North by Northwest) BEST SCRIPT - Ernest Lehman (North by Northwest) BEST DIRECTOR - Alfred Hitchcock (North by Northwest)

Often the way though or at least often many of the best films with best performances do not get any buzz for awards.

None of yours this week: Mine: Dan in Real Life (2007) - 3/10 - DVDUnfunny family drama/comey involves a single parent who falls in love with his brothers girlfriend. Ending just takes the predictable way out. Out Cold (2001) - 4/10 - VHSCrude comedy tries to be a funny but pretty much falls flat. Gets a little better as it goes along though. It really needed the R rating. Many gags seemed toned down. The Gift (2015) - 6/10 - DVDJason Batman stars in this alright thriller in which a couples new friend turns into a gift giving stalker. Ghetto Rhapsody (2001) - 6/10 - VHSReally low budget film carries heart in it making it good watch. Basically its a urban Romeo and Juliet tale. Stalled (2000) - 3/10 - VHSComedy about a rock group that gets stuck in a town of hillbillies. Not funny but gets slightly better in the last third. Die Die Delta Pi (2013) - 4/10 - DVDOK enough slasher film is pretty generic. Watchable but I didnt get the ending. Devoured (2012) - 2/10 - DVDAlthough the DVD shows something supernatural happens its really about a restaurant janitor who goes crazy. Jesse James: Lawman (2015) - 1/10 - DVDAwful horribly made western is embarrassing for everyone. Kevin Sorbo and Peter Fonda cant remotely save this junk. A Letter from Death Row (1998) - 2/10 - DVDLame thriller by Brett Michaels. Charlie Sheen is on the DVD despite being in the film for 5 seconds! Scooby-Doo! And Kiss: Rock and Roll Mystery (2015) - 6/10 - DVDFun cartoon flick is enough to please a KISS fan such as myself. Best Movie this Week: Worst Movie this Week:

Yours: Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse - Will eventually see this at some point Orphan - 8/10 Had the week off during the holidays so I had LOTS of time for watching movies. First Time Viewings:Bird Box (2018) - Netflix Very solid thriller. Sandra Bullock really shined and gave her best performance IMO. Although it can get a bit too emotional and sorrowful and the ending was a bit silly. Still a great movie overall. 7.5/10Feast (2005) - Blu-ray Fun monster movie. There are scenes that are horribly edited and it goes a bit too extreme at times, but I liked the characters and the comedy giving it some levity. 7/10American Wedding (2003) - Netflix Probably the weakest (barring the American Pie Presents spinoffs of course) but still very funny and enjoyable. Seeing Sean William Scott eat dogsh!t was golden! 7/10American Reunion (2012) - Netflix A satisfying conclusion to the franchise. I don’t plan on seeing any of the straight-to-DVD ones anytime soon. 7/10New Year’s Evil (1980) - Online Slasher movie that takes place on New Years (obviously). Don’t hate it, but it’s one of the weaker slashers of the 80’s, IMO. It’s kind of like a campier and way less mysterious version of Black Christmas, phone calls and all, and there are even a few deaths that are similar to ones in BC. 6/10Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) - Online Yeah it wasn’t very necessary but it’s kind of good. Han Solo is one of the best characters in the franchise and I thought Alden Ehrenreich gave it his all as a young Han. Woody Harrelson was also good, despite what they did to him through a twist was pretty stupid. The first half drags out a bit but as it goes on it stars to pick up. Wasn’t as pointless as I was expecting. 6.5/10Split (2017) - DVD You already saw my thread, so I won’t go into detail. 8/10Puppet Master (1989) - DVD A really low-budget B-grade horror film, and the one movie to become Full Moon Pictures’ biggest success spawning a shitton of sequels and a reboot. It’s a very flawed film but I enjoyed it. 7/10Puppet Master II (1990) - DVD Decent sequel for a decent film. It’s got some weird crap in here but again, it works. I do prefer the first one though by a bit. 7/10Puppet Master III: Toulon’s Revenge (1991) - DVD Best sequel so far. The Nazi stuff was very amusing and the cowboy puppet Six Shooter was a great addition to the series. It gets dull at times but can be fun when Germans are being mutilated. 7/10Mad Max: Fury Road - Black and Chrome Edition (2016) - Blu-ray I prefer the coloured version but this style was still pretty solid. 8/10Yes Man (2008) - Netflix Pretty good comedy with Jim Carrey. Though it’s safe to say this is where his career was starting to decline by this point. 7/10The Cable Guy (1996) - Netflix Jim Carrey part 2. I highly enjoyed this one despite its criticism. He and Broderick have hilarious chemistry. 7.5/10Hellboy (2004) - Netflix Fun enough superhero flick that isn’t related to the dominant 2 (Marvel and DC). I wasn’t blown away by it but it was decent. 7/10Blair Witch (2016) - Netflix Well this was on there and since I did see the original not too far back, and that this was like a direct continuation (something that Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 was not) I gave it a go. It’s not very good but it does have some genuinely tense moments and it does feel . It’s just that the story feels contrived and nonsensical. I mean did they really think they’d find Heather after 15 years being in the woods? At least it isn’t Blair Witch 2 (which even then I still haven’t seen). 6/10Black Swan (2010) - DVD Excellent. I kind of regret not finishing this movie when I first saw it as a youngster. I guess at the time it was too disturbing for my age. 8/10Casablanca (1941) - Blu-ray Classic, of course. I do need to watch it again to really get into the movie completely. 8/10Hereditary (2018) - DVD WOW. This was a surprise indeed. Very creepy, haunting and emotionally scarring at the same time. And yep, Toni Collette was just as good as everyone said she was. I might prefer this over A Quiet Place, not sure. 8/10Repeat Viewings:Unbreakable (2000) - Online Still Shamalamadingdong’s finest movie. I love the twist at the end as well. 8/10X-Men: First Class (2011) - Blu-ray A fan-favourite in the series. Does get a bit too cheesy with the acting and dialogue, but it’s a great origin story for these characters. McAvoy and Fassbender were captivating as Xavier and Magneto respectively, and I even enjoyed Kevin Bacon. 7.5/10X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) - Blu-ray My favourite of the traditional X-Men films (which is barring the spinoffs like Logan of course). 8/10X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) - Blu-ray It’s a bit generic and definitely a downgrade from the epically awesome DOFP, but I still enjoyed it. 7/10

7/10Bird Box (2018) did not care for the end that dropped it one point to a 5/10 American Wedding (2003) 5/10 Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) I liked chewie, liked Lando, hated his droid. 6/10 Split (2017) - 8/10 Mad Max: Fury Road - Black and Chrome Edition (2016) - 5.5 Yes Man (2008) - 7/10 The Cable Guy (1996) - Jims best and one of the all time greatest comedies 8/10 Hellboy (2004) - 5/10 Black Swan (2010) - 7/10 Casablanca (1941) - 7/10 Hereditary (2018) 5.5/10 Unbreakable (2000) - I really only like this and split from him 7.5/10 X-Men: First Class (2011) - 7.5/10 X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) - my favourite superhero film 8/10 X-Men: Apocalypse (2016) - 6.5

Yours: The Boy 5/10. For some reason, being a nanny to a doll is never as easy as it sounds.
True Detective. Loved season 1, only managed to force myself to sit through 2 eps of sea 2. I'm on the fence on season 3.
My week:
Deliver Us From Evil(2014) FTV FXM. Sufficiently creepy possession film. 6/10
The Blackcoat's Daughter(2015) FTV Kanopy aka February. Found my mind wandering so I may have missed some clues explaining some (to me) obvious plot holes. 5/10
A Tale of Two Cities(1935)FTV TCM. 1st time for this classic, a bit dated but well acted and I enjoyed it. 7/10
The Ghost of Frankenstein(1942)RV MeTV. Bela Lugosi revives his classic role of Ygor from Son of Frankenstein. Solid supporting cast. Standard Universal monster plot. 6/10

First Time Viewings:
Mid90s (2018, Jonah Hill) This one has been getting really good reviews and I thought it was pretty good overall, with some very good moments here and there. 7/10
Bad Times at the El Royale (2018, Drew Goddard) Based on the trailers and plot synopsis I was getting a Hateful Eight vibe from this one and it turns out the film definitely has some similarities. I don't think it's anywhere near as good as Tarantino's film, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. It's well cast, well paced, and I enjoyed the twists and turns in the story.Good music too. 7.5/10 6/10
Blindspotting (2018, Carlos López Estrada) This one has some pretty powerful moments and good acting from the two main guys. 7/10 6/10
Dogville (2003, Lars Von Trier) A strange, but interesting film. It's nearly three hours, but I found it engaging and the cast did a good job. 7.5/10 7/10
Antichrist (2009, Lars Von Trier) I already knew about the more graphic parts of this film and while they were certainly disturbing, it felt like it was just shock for the sake of shock. The leads are good, but the film didn't do much for me overall and felt like a wasted opportunity. 5/10 8/10
Melancholia (2011, Lars Von Trier) I liked part one a bit more than part two, but both were good and on the whole I liked this one quite a bit. It's well acted and I liked the symbolism. 7.5/10 9/10
The Favourite (2018, Yorgos Lanthimos) I ended up enjoying this one more than I thought I would. It's very well made, has three wonderful performances, and is very entertaining. I was looking forward to it, but I didn't expect to love it. 8.5/10 8/10
Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 (2013, Lars Von Trier) Could have been better if you ask me, but still pretty good. 7/10
Nymphomaniac Vol. 2 (2013, Lars Von Trier) I may have liked this one a tad more than the first. 7/10
The House That Jack Built (2018, Lars Von Trier) I thought this one was really well done. It kept me engaged throughout and had some truly fantastic sequences. Matt Dillon is damn good int he lead role too, which certainly helped. 8/10 9/10
Repeat Viewings:
North by Northwest (1959, Alfred Hitchcock) My favorite Hitchcock. So much fun and with a brilliant script, great score, and a strong cast. 9.5/10 8/10
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975, Terry Gilliam & Terry Jones) Some classic moments in this one make it a pretty fun time. 7/10 5/10
