First Time Viewings:
Mid90s (2018, Jonah Hill) This one has been getting really good reviews and I thought it was pretty good overall, with some very good moments here and there. 7/10
Bad Times at the El Royale (2018, Drew Goddard) Based on the trailers and plot synopsis I was getting a Hateful Eight vibe from this one and it turns out the film definitely has some similarities. I don't think it's anywhere near as good as Tarantino's film, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. It's well cast, well paced, and I enjoyed the twists and turns in the story.Good music too. 7.5/10 6/10
Blindspotting (2018, Carlos López Estrada) This one has some pretty powerful moments and good acting from the two main guys. 7/10 6/10
Bird Box (2018, Susanne Bier) Some nice tension in this one and it has a cool concept that was pretty well executed. I definitely think it could have been better, but it was pretty good and Sandra Bullock puts in some strong work. 7/10
Wildlife (2018, Paul Dano) This family based drama is really well done and has some scenes that will definitely stay with me. Good performances from the main trio too, especially Carey Mulligan, who I think deserves some awards nominations. 8/10
Leave No Trace (2018, Debra Granik) The two leads are good and the film itself is pretty good too. 7/10 7.5/10
Dogville (2003, Lars Von Trier) A strange, but interesting film. It's nearly three hours, but I found it engaging and the cast did a good job. 7.5/10 7/10
Antichrist (2009, Lars Von Trier) I already knew about the more graphic parts of this film and while they were certainly disturbing, it felt like it was just shock for the sake of shock. The leads are good, but the film didn't do much for me overall and felt like a wasted opportunity. 5/10 8/10
Melancholia (2011, Lars Von Trier) I liked part one a bit more than part two, but both were good and on the whole I liked this one quite a bit. It's well acted and I liked the symbolism. 7.5/10 9/10
The Favourite (2018, Yorgos Lanthimos) I ended up enjoying this one more than I thought I would. It's very well made, has three wonderful performances, and is very entertaining. I was looking forward to it, but I didn't expect to love it. 8.5/10 8/10
Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 (2013, Lars Von Trier) Could have been better if you ask me, but still pretty good. 7/10
Nymphomaniac Vol. 2 (2013, Lars Von Trier) I may have liked this one a tad more than the first. 7/10
The House That Jack Built (2018, Lars Von Trier) I thought this one was really well done. It kept me engaged throughout and had some truly fantastic sequences. Matt Dillon is damn good int he lead role too, which certainly helped. 8/10 9/10
Repeat Viewings:
North by Northwest (1959, Alfred Hitchcock) My favorite Hitchcock. So much fun and with a brilliant script, great score, and a strong cast. 9.5/10 8/10
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975, Terry Gilliam & Terry Jones) Some classic moments in this one make it a pretty fun time. 7/10 5/10
Movie Awards:
BEST FILM - North by Northwest Melancholia BEST ACTOR - Matt Dillon (The House That Jack Built) BEST ACTRESS - Carey Mulligan (Wildlife) Charlotte Gainsbourg (Melancholia) BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - James Mason (North by Northwest) Stellan Skarsgard (Nymphomaniac: Vol. 2) BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS - Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY - Robbie Ryan (The Favourite) Melancholia BEST SCORE - Bernard Herrmann (North by Northwest) BEST SCRIPT - Ernest Lehman (North by Northwest) Melancholia BEST DIRECTOR - Alfred Hitchcock (North by Northwest) Lars Von Trier (Melancholia) I think I'd probably put Gainsbourg supporting, but you definitely like her performance more than I do, regardless.

First Viewings...
-The Age of Adaline (2015) (Jan 5th 2019) - 6-6.5/10 (within my Top 236 movies. but ill have to see how it holds up on a re-watch. overall this was a bit of a surprise for me. I think I stumbled into this from your post of this not all that long ago.)
Re-watches...
-Mission Impossible: Fallout (2018) (Dec 31st 2018) - 7/10 (my 2nd viewing and it held steady but something is missing from this one in comparison to the 1st/3rd/5th/4th movies which I gave a 7.5-8/10. I think it's probably partially the locations etc tend to be more interesting in those even though the helicopter scene is solid in MI6.)
-Braveheart (1995) (Jan 1st 2019) - 10/10 (it's 10/10 status remains as it's only one of eight movies that managed to pull it off)
-Annihilation (2018) (Jan 3rd 2019) - 6-6.5/10 (was a 6/10 on my initial viewing but went up a bit this time around which is my 2nd viewing. within my Top 236 movies.)
-Heat (1995) (Jan 4th 2019) - 6/10 (held steady since my previous viewing even though the one prior to that it was a 10/10 for years but I simply no longer enjoy this movie to a high level anymore. I think one of the better scenes though is when Pacino and DeNiro are talking to each other)
-Nightcrawler (2014) (Jan 5th 2019) - 6-6.5/10 (was a 7/10 on my initial viewing, dropped back to a 6/10 on my 2nd viewing and now on my 3rd viewing it went back to a 6-6.5/10. within my Top 236 movies.)
-Casino (1995) (Jan 6th 2019) - 7.5-8/10 (within my Top 102 movies. it's my 3rd favorite Scorsese behind... 1)The Color of Money (1986) (8/10) 2)The Aviator (2004) (7.5-8/10))
p.s. in general for me... 5/10 or less = Thumbs Down. 6/10 or higher = Thumbs Up.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OP's...
-Orphan (2009) - 5/10 (this used to be a 7.5-8/10 til a re-watch on Aug 6th 2016. Aug 6th 2013 was my previous re-watch at and that time the 7.5-8/10 remained. but my favorite Vera Farmiga movies are... 1)Source Code (2011) (9/10) 2)Up in the Air (2009) (8-8.5/10) 3)Running Scared (2006) (8/10) 4)At Middleton (2013) (7-7.5/10) 5)The Departed (2006) (7/10). to my knowledge I am not aware of another actress who's got a better overall Top 5 movies than Vera.)

Welcome back to another week of the BEST & WORST edition of 'what movies did you see last week?' thread. For those who haven't been part of it before, basically your host (me) posts my weekly movies and you can comment on those and list your movie for the same time frame. I will get back to you on yours and you can talk to other users here about their films. It's a great place to talk about film. FIRST TIME MOVIE VIEWING
Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse (2018, Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey) Cinema
Wondeful blend of animation styles, great nods to comic book styles, good soundtrack and easily the best spiderman film yet. Makes my top 10 of the year. 7.5/10 Updated 2018 top 10
1. Thoroughbreds 7.5-8 2. The Other Side of the Wind 7.5 3. First Reformed 7.5 4. Mission: Impossible - Fallout 7.5 5. Leave no Trace 7.5 6. Deadpool 2 7.5 7. Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse 8. Incredibles 2 7.5 9. American Animals 7 10. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs 7 Captain Fantastic (2016, Matt Ross) NetflixSet in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, a father devoted to raising his six kids with a rigorous physical and intellectual education is forced to leave his paradise and enter the world, challenging his idea of what it means to be a parent. It is well acted but just kind of finishes when it feels like there is more to be told. 6/10 The Boy (2016, William Brent Bell) Netflix
A doll horror set in England, it is pretty bad, I called the twist about 25 minutes in. 4/10 REPEAT MOVIE VIEWING
Orphan (2009, Jaume Collet-Serra) blu ray
Simple little horror, a bit tedious in the middle but a strong finish. 6/10FIRST TIME TV VIEWING Watership Down (2018, Limited Series) Netflix
Four episode retelling of the famous novel done with cgi animation. Enjoyed this, not for kids though. Recommended REPEAT TV VIEWING True Detective (2014, Season One) blu ray
One of the greatest seasons of television ever. Look forward to the new season later this month, apparently a return to form. Highly Recommended WEEKLY AWARDS
BEST FILM: Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse BEST ACTOR: Viggo Mortensen - Captain Fantastic BEST ACTRESS: Isabelle Fuhrman - Orphan BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: George Mackay - Captain Fantastic BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Samantha Isler - Captain Fantastic BEST SCRIPT: Phil Lord & Rodney Rothman - Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY: Stephane Fontaine - Captain Fantastic BEST SCORE: Daniel Pemberton - Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse BEST EDITING: Robert Fisher Jr. - Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse BEST DIRECTOR: Matt Ross - Captain Fantastic 10/10 - Perfection (or as close to it as possible) 09/10 - An Excellent film 08/10 - A VERY Good film 07/10 - A Good film 06/10 - A Solid film 05/10 - An Average film 04/10 - Below Average film 03/10 - A mostly bad film 02/10 - A mostly terrible film 01/10 - Awful through and through 00/10 - Not only awful but offensive too Hi, Dark. Yours: The Boy 4/10 Yep, didn't like it. I actually don't think the twist makes much sense too. Orphan 7.5/10 Yeah, I remember it being a bit trashy but I enjoyed it. Mine: At Eternity's Gate 8.5/10 It's the movie about Van Gogh with Willem Dafoe. Loved it, it's not easy, it's kind of experimental, it's intense though. Willem Dafoe is really great. Ethan Hawke is still my win, but Willem is close though. In Harm's Way 7/10 It's an Otto Preminger movie, with John Wayne and Kirk Douglas, about a Captain and an officer in the US Navy during and in the aftermath of Pearl Harbour. It's O.K., it kind of feels like a soap opera maybe, but I don't mind that. It feels too long though, IMO. The cast is great, there's Henry Fonda too, Burgess Meredith... The Virgin Spring 10/10 Ingmar Bergman movie. Masterpiece, IMO. I found it really amazing, so powerful, it really blew me away. Max Von Sydow is fantastic, all the cast is. Mad Max 8/10 The first one. I think it might be my least favourite of the Mad Max movies, I like it though. The chase scenes are truly great.

Hi, Dark. In Harm's Way 7/10 It's a Otto Preminger movie, with John Wayne and Kirk Douglas, about a Captain and an officer in the US Navy during and in the aftermath of Pearl Harbour. It's O.K., it kind of feels like a soap opera maybe, but I don't mind that. It feels too long though, IMO. The cast is great, there's Henry Fonda too, Burgess Meredith... The Virgin Spring 9/10 Ingmar Bergman movie. I thought it was really amazing, it's so powerful, it really blew me away. Max Von Sydow is fantastic, all the cast is. Mad Max 8/10 The first one. I think it might be my least favourite of the Mad Max movies, I like it though. The chase scenes are truly great. Hey Billy! Just Mad Max from yours and I am not a fan of the series but this is actually my least favourite of the four. 4/10 I love the series. Beyond Thunderdome too. You should check out The Virgin Spring, even if you're not big on Bergman. It really stayed with me. It does have a horror vibe, especially in the first half. It's like a dark fable.

darksidebeadle I forgot to mention that as it slipped my mind. it's probably his best acting off the top of my head as he played that part quite well as I guess most of his roles he's sort of on auto-pilot but not here. Hell, you must praise a fair amount of Scorsese movies then as it's a 9/10, which is quite high for you, and places 4th on your Scorsese ranks.

I have 5 Scorsese films in my top 50 and then a big gap for the next best after that
