... assuming you have one, of course. By title, by director, by genre, or how? And if by title, do you do it IMDb style (including the definite and indefinite article) or BATouttaheck style, ignoring the article?
I have mine on an Excel database, so as long as I maintain the key worksheet I can summon up other worksheets by title (IMDb style), director, year released (I just use the IMDb date shown, so US release date) or my own points rating. I have not bothered with "genre" as 95% of my movies would be "drama".
I also include those downloaded electronically and would include VHS tapes had I not dumped my collection when I emigrated. (Some of them impossible to replace on DVD, which I grieve over, but had no choice).
Well, that was the theory, but being a lazy SOB I have let my database deteriorate into a muddle, so I have to refresh it and am looking for any better ideas.

Alpha by title, library sort order, omitting articles.
Cabinet #1 is mostly TV and sort of disorganized.
Cabinet #2 is movies and separated into "hers" and "his", or more accurately, "ours" and "mine". No point in my wife have to scan through films she will never want to see.
This is for high priority titles. For overflow I put the discs in three ring binders and the cases go into storage. The binders are in the next room.
I also keep a text database that is program readable and generate all sorts of fascinating reports from it.

8 Shelves chronologically year by year with a few box sets and the entire Woody Allen back catalogue on top. Two folders of DVDRs alphabetically. Several USB sticks of MP4s no real system.... I'm in process of cataloging titles and formats - with a view to moving more onto MP4s to free up space. Now if only I could flog the thousand or so on dvds/vhs that I don't want.

I would arrange them by title WITHOUT the article...but what happens when you add a new DVD to your collection? Do you just keep shoving them down the shelf(ves)? I don't have enough DVDs to arrange, but I went through the same thing with my classical music CD collection. I kept adding and removing CDs until I finally settled on putting index numbers on the ribs of my jewel boxes... and finding the particular CD from my master list..by the index number on the jewel box.

In binders by genre. Separate binders for large collections of Actresses, actors, directors. A binder for films by national origin. I still have lots of boxes of vhs tapes. I have them all in a data base sorted by title, Star, Director, genre, and box, binder or folder.

Most of my DVDs are just copies of discs without boxes. I keep them in folders mostly arranged by genre. My war film folder is arranged historically, so the ancient history films are at the beginning and the modern war films are at the end. I also have sections for Sci-Fi, Drama, Comedy, Horror, etc. I eventually grew tired of trying to keep them alphabetized.

Totally scattered.
I started with the ones I bought alphabetically, and the ones I made by number with a file.
Then I bought a 400 DVD player, which eventually broke, so I bought a 400 BluRay DVD player and had to switch the DVDs in the machines, which was a chore.
Then my girlfriend died, so I switched rooms, and had to move the new DVD player into another room.
They say not to move 400 DVD players with the DVDs in them, so I emptied out the new DVD player and moved it, but lost the list of the order they are in.
Now it is very hard to find a goddam thing, and the fact that I'm the laziest man in the world hasn't helped.

Alphabetically by Director, chronologically within Director by my assumed release date, boxsets filed by earliest film for the most part. Except my Meiko Kaji (actress) boxsets, which are interfiled under her name
A few films I have where the Director wasn't a key factor in my purchase and I only have the one film by them, are arranged alphabetically by title, seperate sequence
TV series by title, seperate sequence

If this is a real database, you could just add one more variable: Index Number. Then you can shelve them by Index Number and use your database to locate the particular DVD you want when you search your database sheet. That way, it would not matter how you self them. Just shelve them as 0001, 0002, 0003, etc. Then, you could just find them on the shelf using the Index Number.
Therefore, the physical shelving would not matter at all, and you could just add (or delete) DVDs as you wish in the future...but always make sure your Index Numbers are kept up to date.
With a good database list (and physically organizing them by box Index Number), you could organize them in as many variables as you like: years, genres, directors, actors, whatever you chose for include in the database...

Movies are alphabetical by genre with sequels grouped together regardless of title. TV series' are purely chronological.

I have no organization or system whatsoever, I know were most of them are anyway, and if they are not where I thought they ought to have been, then they must be somewhere else. In other words it's a mess.

Blus on one shelf alpha, movies bookended by tv shows & movie sets. Wes Anderson blus on another shelf, Criterions except for the most recent 2. 5 Hitchcock DVDs on that shelf. 5 Disney animateds on that shelf. DVDs alpha. Christmas movie DVDs on a shelf with comedy special dvds. Sports/Special Interest DVDs on a shelf. TV show DVDs on a shelf.
Other than the alpha shelves, I gave up trying to be aesthetically perfect - some tv show boxes are stacked horizontally on top of spined ones. As are several box sets & special boxed DVDs.
