He's a great composer given a boost by Quentin Tarantino's appropriation of his music. Another great composer from Buenos Aires, Argentina is his contemporary Lalo Schifrin. They were born within a year of each other and both men are still active making music.
Outside of Italy, it seems every other Italian composer lives in the shadow of Ennio Morricone and Nino Rota. That's not their fault, just the way it is. But Italy has produced many great film composers.
