What happened to Mills after the events of this film? Probably no charges brought against him but likely out of a job.

Mills - Rod Taylor Sommerset - Sterling Hayden John Doe - Richard Widmark Tracy - Stella Stevens Chief of police - Ed Begley Eh not seeing Taylor as Mills too demure and defined as well. You need someone more blue collar actually.

I like most of that cast, but as another poster stated, Rod Taylor doesn't really fit. He was co king with Charlton Heston of the ridiculously hateful "cynic" hero characters.
I'd put someone vulnerable looking, like Anthony Perkins, in that role. But a better pick, I think, is BRADFORD DILLMAN
Tempted to go with Poitier on the obvious grounds of color and his role as Mr. Tibbs, but in going with the moderate, calm cool guy, I'm not really sure that's the gigantic Hayden. I'll go with FRANK LOVEJOY
Quite comfortable with your pick for heroine, though URSULA ANDRESS comes to mind first.
Police chief. I'll go with ERNEST BORGNINE
Deranged killer. I really like Widmark better in his "sane" roles. For the "god playing lunatic" I'll go with ORSON WELLES.

Mills - Paul Newman Sommerset - Henry Fonda John Doe - Brando Tracy - Lee Remick Chief of police - Lee J Cobb Why Brando as John Doe? If anything I think he'd be more suited for Mills.

Brando - charismatic but capable of the most insane actions.

Mills - Tony Curtis Sommerset - Humphrey Bogart John Doe - Karl Malden Tracy - Janet Leigh Chief of police - Sterling Hayden At least one person casts Janet Leigh in the female lead in every one of these hypothetical old casts. She must've been one hell of a versatile actress.

She must've been one hell of a versatile actress. Well, she was certainly good at dying unexpectedly in 1960 movies. I was just going for a popular celebrity couple like Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow in '95.

Haha Stella Stevens. Not poking fun at it, just amused to see her turn up in a cast list. She had a flair for comedy.
So let me think 1960
Mills - Ty Hardin--scratch that, George Peppard (stealing it from another list)
Somerset - Jimmy Stewart (I picked him without having seen him turn up in someone else's list)
John Doe - Peter Lorre
Tracy - Carole Lynley
