a terrific film that is at times hampered by the haphazard pace and lack of a good print. but those are minor complaints, frankly. after an office going square guy murders his daughter's drug dealer boyfriend, he befriends a working class right wing zealot in a bar. they become close buddies who hang out with each other. when the square guy's daughter suspects her father of murdering her boyfriend and disappears, the working class guy goes out of his way to help his new friend.
i liked how the writer did not let his political affiliations get in the way of telling a good story. he does not hit us on the head with how dark these characters are. these are regular guys, in fact, the character JOE (played by PETER BOYLE who if you may recall also gave some advice to the disturbed TRAVIS BICKLE in TAXIDRIVER) is like that plain talking gun toting friend who would stick up for you no matter what the situation is (i have a few uncles like him). sure, he spews racist crap, but he is so much more entertaining than the square wife and the boring office job. here is a man's man you can drink with and go bowling with. i wonder whether the COEN's were inspired by the JOE character while creating JOHN GOODMAN's Walter character in THE BIG LEBOWSKI. at one point when the two right-wingers hang out with a bunch of drug addicts (while searching for the daughter), the film does turn into AMERICAN PIE for a little while. but there is no happy ending here. the final shootout and freeze frame ending were gripping. the young SUSAN SARANDON was so damn pretty.
in this age of alt-right internet celebrities, incels, loneliness and friendships formed over the internet, this film is begging for a remake. or maybe not.
(8/10)

Saw it when it came out – a cult film of sorts. Thanks for mentioning it here.

I saw this as the support film back in the 1970s. I didn’t know anything about it beforehand so didn’t know where the plot was going and I loved it. It’s the film that always comes to mind when people mention Peter Boyle.

Was this the Olive blu ray release? I've never seen the film but was thinking about blind buying the disc.

A couple things off Wikipedia:
"The film has garnered both critical acclaim and box office success. Produced on a tight budget of only $106,000, it grossed over $19.3 million in the United States,[1][2] making it the 13th highest-grossing film of 1970."
"Ten weeks before Joe was released in the United States, a real-life mass murder with similarities to the movie's climactic scenes occurred in Detroit, Michigan. On May 7, 1970, a railroad worker named Arville Douglas Garland entered a university residence and killed his daughter, her boyfriend and two other students.[16] During pre-trial deliberations, Judge Joseph A. Gillis saw Joe and strongly advised both the prosecution and defense teams to do the same. He then carefully screened each member of the jury pool and excluded any who had seen the movie. He also forbade any seated juror from watching the movie or discussing it with anyone who had seen it.[17] Although he brought with him multiple weapons and extra ammunition, Garland received a light sentence. Before and after sentencing, Garland received hundreds of letters from parents across the country who expressed sympathy with him. It was also reported that during the first weeks after his sentencing, he received no letters expressing outrage or condemnation of his actions."

I haven't seen the movie, but I remember that Mad magazine did a satire/parody/caricature of it. So I have heard about it.

Peter Boyle starred in Joe (1970) and Crazy Joe (1974), I've seen both and always confuse the two, even though they are nothing alike.
