This kind of made me think what's the greatest HBO Original Show of All-Time? Sopranos Tales From the Crypt The Hitchhiker Dream On Deadwood Carnival Now I love mob movies - but I also love horror - so I think TFTC and The Hitchhiker can't be so easily dismissed - also - if you've never seen/heard of Dream On? I highly recommend looking it up. In fact - I think Martin Tupper's life may mirror a lot of ours on here. Not The Wire?

Dream On was great for the T&A when that stuff wasn't as readily available as a kid. You didn't watch that show for the story. TFTC was great, there are a few episodes I still remember to this day. Ever see the one where the doctor pranked his friend into thinking he (the friend) was dead and performed a fake autopsy on him? Great stuff. I tried to get into Carnival but I never could do it. Deadwood is still greatly appreciated and they're finally going ahead with the film! The Wire has already been mentioned elsewhere in this thread, but we can't talk about the greatest shows in HBO history without mentioning Rome. Rome is one I never watched. Not even that I didn't get into it, I just don't think I've ever seen a single minute of it. Heard great things, seemed too expensive to continue. In order to make a show on that scale, you really need it to garner mass appeal, a la Game of Thrones. You really should check it out. Incredible show; fantastic performances everywhere and the writing never let up. No room for filler in two seasons.

The Wire is great. Seasons 3 and 4 in particular feature some of the best work HBO ever did. Omar Little might have been my favorite character in TV history. And Stringer Bell isn't far behind.

Own the first season on DVD and gave the first episode a watch a couple of times but didn't/couldn't get into it. (Used to live around the street from a place I could get DVDs for $4.99 - don't ask - let's just say they're no longer in business.
Now you may ask - if you've never seen a show or movie before - than what the hell would you buy it for? Well - I've been the victim of 'Blind Buys' before that I figured would be a decent purchase based on old reviews from our old friend the original IMDB.
One previous 'Blind Buy' was 'The Host' - a Japanese Monster Movie who's DVD art cover stated - 'The Japanese Jaws' with like 5 stars and critically acclaimed reviews from web bloggers (or made up papers) and an astronomical review on IMDB (probably by like 2 people)
Maybe my own fault for being distracted and not giving it an honest chance and not having enough patience with it.
Been recommended by the masses.
Is it anything like Hunter? Hunter is my old school go to crime drama with Fred Dwyer from The Rams.

Dream On was a good show, but not particularly memorable. Tales From The Crypt, now there's a show. Yeah, there are some shitty episodes, but overall it's among the top horror serials ever made. Some truly excellent episodes throughout. Deadwood and Carnival are both great and under-appreciated. The Wire has already been mentioned elsewhere in this thread, but we can't talk about the greatest shows in HBO history without mentioning Rome. I agree about Carnival. Have owned the series for years but have never made it past episode #2.
Was hoping for a Twin Peaks vibe - just couldn't get invested in any of the characters.
Yep - remember the TFTC - think Beau Bridges was in it.
Own a few of the seasons and have my own personal favorites as well.
The killer Santa, the two parents who are vampires and try to fatten a kid up and the kid turns out to be a werewolf and turns the tables, Morton Downey Jr in the ghost house one - it was like a lot of anthology series - you had your gems - but a lot of bombs like The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Tales From The Darkside..........

The Wire is great. Seasons 3 and 4 in particular feature some of the best work HBO ever did. A Larry Crowne series on HBO would be fantastic!

Game of Thrones is still the best show HBO ever did to me, but The Sopranos and The Wire are close.

I actually enjoyed Entourage too Also enjoyed: The Larry Sanders Show (with Gary Shandling - was brilliant) Was Arliss HBO or Showtime? Get that confused like Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Just watching The Blue Comet ep again. The hit on Bobby was pure genius. The train set, the little toy characters on the train set, the tranis themselves (train moving to camera when the killers are coming in, the train derailing as Bacala dies). No doubt that the Sopranos was the best TV ever. And the final scene, Tony with the artillery piece laying in bed, staring at the door. Might be the 6th or 7th time I've seen it and it gets better every time.

I rewatched Season 1 last weekend. I was disappointed. I didn't like it nearly as much as I remembered it.
Carmela, Livia, AJ, and Christopher just annoyed the hell out of me.
I still love watching clips on youtube though.
It's the same with Oz.
Now I'm almost afraid to rewatch The Wire. I don't want to hate that too.

Game of Thrones is still the best show HBO ever did to me, but The Sopranos and The Wire are close. I started watching Game of Thrones at the beginning of Season 5. I loved it. I loved seasons 6 & 7 as well. I went back and labored through seasons 1-4. I don't know why but I just can't get into it.

The problem is you kinda started with the climax and bigger budget seasons. Had you started from season 1 the series would’ve ramped up for you thru the first 3-4 seasons. Season 5 slows it back down a notch but 6 and 7 had started working it toward its endgame closing storylines and characters out in sometimes spectacular fashion.

Favourite show ever, only one I've watched a 2nd time and will watch again and again in the future.
For anybody that never watched it, I tell them to watch the "Pine Barrens" ep as a taster and if they dont like that then look elsewhere for your entertainment
