Seeing SUPERMAN THE MOVIE in 1978. The opening, the Krypton scenes, the football kick and train running. Seeing THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK on my birthday in 1980. I remember it was a grey day, and the long lines-and there was a guy sitting in front of me who had a deformed ear. The surprises were surprises. The cliffhanger was disturbing. A three year wait?
Seeing RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK in my pajamas as a spur of the moment thing (since we didn't plan to see it as it had already gone and then was brought back). I knew the story in detail but the Ark opening was a big shock.
Seeing WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT and the scene where Daffy Duck and Donald Duck appear on screen together (I knew about the movie being made for 2 years so was looking forward to the cameos). Saw a lot of movies at drive-ins--if it was a horror film I would get spooked about someone opening the back door. Intrigued by the pajamas incident? You just didn't bother getting dressed, just straight out of the house to the flix house?

Some boys cheered the helicopter assault scene in Apocalypse Now. Youthful fascination with war persists. I saw that, too. And cheers during Magnum Force when one of the killer cops shot the gangster and his coke-dusted boy & girl playmates on the water bed. Two of the happiest audiences I have seen were for science fiction sequels: for The Empire Strikes Back when the logo and fanfare come up, and during the space battle scenes in The Wrath of Khan. The third was a really strange case. I was traveling and went to see a light romantic comedy: Notting Hill. The audience was prepared to be entertained. I mean, early on: "Would you like some coffee?" Wild hysterical laughter, people crying. Then: "Oh, how about an orange juice?" Pandemonium, collapsing in the aisles, loss of body function. I still don't know what was happening. Empire Strikes Back. It was very much a case of the expectation levels being met after we had all seen and loved Star Wars on the big screen, I remember queuing for hours to see it. Worth every minute of wait time.

Intrigued by the pajamas incident? You just didn't bother getting dressed, just straight out of the house to the flix house? What happened was, we decided to go for a drive at night and I hopped in the back seat--probably a spur of the moment thing since we were just going to drive around and then I'd go to bed. But in this case, I think I just had a jacket and we drove by the theater--and we saw it was playing that night so because we didn't want to miss it again--we went in.
Being in my pajamas just made it more comfy.

Funny thing was that in 1984 I skipped school on a Wednesday to see Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom opening day in the morning. I did not tell many people I was going. I saw it and the next day in class, I had a laid back art teacher--he does the roll call and when he gets to my name he just looks at me calmly and says: "How was it?"

Seeing first run movies here for just a little bit more $ than at the local theater : Grand staircase in the Lobby Plus a Stage Show: AND you could stay as long as you liked and see it all several times through ! How wonderfully ornate

This goes way back to the 1950's: As a kid, I attended numerous matinees of Grade Z movies. On one such occasion, we were informed that Richard Kiel would make an appearance at the theater. I don't remember the film he was in, but needless to say, he was larger than life. No pun intended. He was a gentle giant of a man. The venue, called The Logan Theater in Chicago, is still in operation showing oldie films. I also saw the "Tingler" with Vincent Price at the same theater as well as "The 10 Commandments". You know I have to ask, did you get The Tingler experience, the shocker seats?

And I also saw a sneak preview premiere of "Barry Lyndon" at the famous ornate Granada Theater, in Chicago.

Harbor Theater, Brooklyn NY -- My Home away from Home most every Saturday in my youth. All day matinees with double features, a ton of cartoons and short subjects, a box of jujubes or root bear barrels and you could stay and meet mom when she came to see the real double feature films for the grown-ups. Movie tickets …. 35 cents. NOW The Dance scenes in Saturday Night Fever were filmed here and the restaurant is just down the block. Great that the building remains untouched though, my favourite picture house was dismantled brick by brick and replaced by a corporate monstrosity! Every brick remains in storage, and I mean it when I say that if I ever win the lottery before I croak it then I'm going to have The Gaumont Cinema restored - brick by brick!

While at it .. the "other" local theaters … rarely attended because a bus trip was needed to get there. Each theater played films from different studios . Super pictures mate, thanks for sharing
